During a conversation with Kyle Meredith, Avril Lavigne talked about her sixth and latest studio album, last year's "Head Above Water," and how it was influenced by her battle with Lyme disease.
Avril also discussed the other topics the record covers. She said (transcribed by UG):
"This last album, 'Head Above Water' was just so personal - all my songs are, but this was on a very deep level of what I was going through in my life at that time.
"The 'Head Above Water' album was so healing for me, I didn't know if I would be doing music anymore with what I had gone through with my health struggle.
"And I came out turning to music and writing songs without even trying to write them, so 'Head Above Water' and 'Warrior' were the first two songs I wrote that were just like on my heart.
"It's about me fighting and trying to survive what I was going through, and the beauty of music is that it can mean different things to different people, and it's like with this song 'Warrior,' taking on a whole new life of its own.
"And it's like now it has a whole new meaning with what's going on in the world today, and that's what I do, turn to music and write about what I'm going through."
Do you perceive earlier songs differently than the ones that did come towards the end?
"Yeah, it's just - the two songs are about my health battles, and the other songs, some of them are about relationships, different other things I've gone through in my life.
"It was about believing in yourself and listening to your gut. Or [Nicki Minaj collaboration] 'Dumb Blonde,' it's just about female empowerment, I touched on a bunch of different subjects on this album that maybe I didn't totally hit on before.
"There's a lot of growth, I'm at a different point in my life, and I was going through different stuff, and I sort of express myself in another way, so it was cool.
"It's like creating so much and writing other songs different than that album, so that's about just like tapping into what you're going through, and I try to just be sincere with my music and that's the way I like it the most."
This could've been a sad album. What kept you from going that direction, for it to be the exact opposite?
"I'm a strong person, and I like to have a message of strength in my music so that I can look at the situation in the eye and keep moving forward, and that's how we have to be in life, like, through different things we go through.
"Whether it's the troubles in a relationship or like with your health, or whatever it is you're trying to figure out what direction you're going in your life or not, and I like my message to my fans to be inspirational so that people can feel good and get strengthened, and it can encourage them.
"And that's what I love about 'We Are Warriors,' it's like I hope that if there's some inspiration in there for people during this time in the world, I hope that it brings hope, that people feel good and it encourages people. I just really wanted to express and share my gratitude and honor to the frontline workers too."
