 Taylor Swift’s Fourth of July party is in full swing. The “Shake It Off” singer shared photos from her Independence Day bash at her Rhode Island home on Friday, which showed her having fun with her "squad," including boyfriend Calvin Harris. Swift got into the patriotic spirit with several gal pals, jumping in the air holding an American flag along with Gigi Hadid, the Haim sisters, longtime friend Britany Maack, “Empire” star Serayah and Victoria’s Secret model Martha Hunt. The 25-year-old star also included a snap that showed her getting cozy with her musician beau.  “Friendly relations between Scotland and America,” Swift captioned an Instagram photo of getting a piggyback ride from her Scottish boyfriend. Swift and Harris could also be seen cuddling in a photo taken during their pool party.  Redcoat: Ed Sheeran teasingly showed up at Taylor's place wearing a red military jacket like the ones worn by British soldiers who fought the colonists during the revolutionary war. She reminded him how the war ended. |

Back in simpler, snake Emoji-less times before the media turned against Taylor Swift, our blonde songstress was very publicly thriving with her carousel of famous friends: Karlie Kloss here, Selena Gomez there, some unnamed Victoria’s Secret models out in the back. You couldn’t open a magazine or scroll through Instagram without being bombarded with Swift’s “girl squad,” and what do you know, overexposure syndrome eventually kicked in with all of those Fourth of July parties as a result. After a long hiatus, Swift is slowly re-aligning herself with some new squad members, but seemingly regrets how everything went down with her OG squad.
As she wrote in a new essay for Elle, “drama” plagued the group and caused its ultimate demise. She also admitted she brought the girls together because of childhood insecurities: Even as an adult, I still have recurring flashbacks of sitting at lunch tables alone or hiding in a bathroom stall, or trying to make a new friend and being laughed at. In my twenties I found myself surrounded by girls who wanted to be my friend. So I shouted it from the rooftops, posted pictures, and celebrated my newfound acceptance into a sisterhood, without realizing that other people might still feel the way I did when I felt so alone. It’s important to address our long-standing issues before we turn into the living embodiment of them.
Swift also said she’s blocked the phone numbers of certain friends who’ve caused her “unsolvable” pain — ooooh — and has some Tumblr words of wisdom for anyone contemplating a friend break-up. “It’s sad but sometimes when you grow, you outgrow relationships,” she advises. “You may leave behind friendships along the way, but you’ll always keep the memories.” Not if you get flashed by one of those Men in Black neuralyzers, but whatever.

Once upon a time, Taylor Swift’s girl squad was a remarkable lineup of celebrities who hung out with the singer at her house parties and joined her on stage at her concerts. Swift’s fans were envious of her squad, something Swift later acknowledged she felt a bit bad about, and many wondered if it was all just a PR stunt. Taylor Swift's great Tayamerica Fourth of July 2020 party isn't happening, and the coronavirus pandemic isn't the only reason that the celeb-filled bash is off (though obviously it is a big one for everyone: large gatherings are generally discouraged because they can easily spread the virus). Swift, who used to throw elaborate Fourth of July parties at her Watch Hill, Rhode Island, beach house each year, spoke to The Guardian in its August 2019 profile on her about what made her stop the annual tradition. Swift hasn't thrown a Fourth of July party since 2016—that was the party, by the way, where her then-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston wore his infamous "I <3 T.S." tank. The outlet wrote that according to Swift, her "disillusionment" with America led her to stop the extravaganzas.  In that interview, Swift also acknowledged her role in creating such a public fascination around her, her "squad," their parties, and life together by making their relationships so public on social media. If she didn't post a happy birthday tribute to a friend on Instagram, for example, people and outlets would speculate that the friendship was strained or over. “Because we didn’t post about it, it didn’t happen—and I realized I had done that," Swift said. "I created an expectation that everything in my life that happened, people would see.” Swift addressed her political silence back then too, saying she regrets it in hindsight and would have endorsed Clinton. “The worst part of the timing of what happened in 2016 was I felt completely voiceless," she said, alluding to her summer of scandals that included the end of her and Hiddleston's relationship and Kim Kardashian's Snapchat takedown of her. "I just felt like, oh God, who would want me? Honestly...I just felt completely, ugh, just useless. And maybe even like a hindrance.” Swift later explained to Vogue in its September 2019 issue that she was afraid her endorsement would hurt Clinton. “Unfortunately in the 2016 election you had a political opponent who was weaponizing the idea of the celebrity endorsement," she said, without dropping Trump's name explicitly. Swift said she also thought about the parallels between her and Clinton's public images because of her damaged reputation that summer. These are the same exact insults people were hurling at Hillary," Swift said. "Would I be an endorsement or would I be a liability? Look, snakes of a feather flock together. Look, the two lying women. The two nasty women. Literally millions of people were telling me to disappear. So I disappeared. In many senses.” Swift has since become more politically active. Her most liked tweet ever was her calling Trump out directly for his "stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism" in May. |
