Prince Charles, king-in-waiting, oldest heir to the British throne in 300 years, has never been perceived as the most charismatic member of the royal family.
Instead, says biographer Sally Bedell Smith, he has often been overshadowed by his revered mother, Queen Elizabeth, the ghost of his wife Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in 1997, and his two glamorous sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
To Smith, Charles is warmer and more informal than the British tabloids have ever shown him, and also a man who has tried to move the dial in the U.K. on climate change, saving the rainforest and urban planning.
Her book, says Smith, who has also written biographies of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth, seeks to unpack “what really made this guy tick, and what was going on behind those public stories.”

The Palace has responded to reports that Prince Charles doesn't get along with Prince William and Prince Harry, and they are not having it. In an extremely rare statement to The Express, Clarence House said the claims are "complete fiction," meaning that Charles is absolutely not on bad terms with his kids. Said claims come from a Daily Beast source, who says that while there hasn't been some big blow-out fight between Charles, William, and Harry, they "just don’t get on." Which, judging from this very happy picture, is hard to believe: "They are very different people and they just don’t get on. It’s as simple as that," the source said in an article titled Inside the Cold War Between Prince Charles and William and Harry. "They rarely see each other outside of official business." The source also claims that Charles "hates" when William and Harry partake in public "emoting" about their mother. Which...sure.

The Prince of Wales didn’t take too well when his sons, Prince Harry and Prince William, played a joke on him. But Princess Diana just laughed the prank off. The two boys set off a stink bomb in Charles’ office when they were young, according to Diana’s personal trainer. Carolan Brown told The Daily Mail: “One day William and Harry let a stink bomb off in the hall after Diana had taken them to the joke shop, and then they let another off in Charles's office. “He went absolutely mad, but Diana just laughed.” The late princess enjoyed practical jokes on other family members and once embarrassed William with a rude cake for his 13th birthday. However, William may be one of the reasons Diana never remarried.
