As cinemas prepare to reopen across the U.S., Sony announced Tuesday that The Broken Hearts Gallery will be released on the big screen July 10.
The rom-com, from Stage 6 Films, will be the first new title from a major Hollywood studio to unfurl in theaters since the coronavirus pandemic forced them to go dark in the latter part of March. Several weeks ago, indie studio Solstice Studios announced that the Russell Crowe thriller Unhinged will open on July 1.
The Broken Hearts Gallery stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Dacre Montgomery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Molly Gordon, Phillipa Soo, Suki Waterhouse, Arturo Castro, Ego Nwodim, Taylor Hill and Bernadette Peters. Selena Gomez is an executive producer.
In a competitive situation, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions’ Stage 6 Films says it acquired worldwide rights to writer and director Natalie Krinsky’s directorial debut from producer and financier No Trace Camping. Elevation Pictures will distribute the film in Canada.
"Hearing from more female writers and directors is very much needed. Natalie is a wonderful talent and I am happy to be a part of her debut film. I understand people’s concerns regarding returning to activities we all loved prior to COVID-19. I hope everyone will listen to scientists’ recommendations and consider others’ health and safety while enjoying the movie theater experience," Selena Gomez, an executive producer on the film, said in a statement.
"Now more than ever, The Broken Hearts Gallery will resonate with audiences ready for a feel-good moviegoing experience this summer," Sony's Motion Picture Group president Josh Greenstein added. "We have faith in a theatrical rebound, and we look forward to being there right out of the gate with our exhibition partners’ anticipated reemergence, as — and when — state-by-state safety guidelines are met."

Sony is banking on moviegoers heading back to theaters this summer.
The film studio announced Tuesday that they are releasing "The Broken Hearts Gallery" in theaters on July 10. This is the first major theatrical release from the studio in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The movie, which is executive produced by Selena Gomez, stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Dacre Montgomery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Molly Gordon, Phillipa Soo, Suki Waterhouse, Arturo Castro, Ego Nwodim, Taylor Hill and Bernadette Peters. It marks the directorial debut of Natalie Krinsky.
"Hearing from more female writers and directors is very much needed," Gomez said in a statement. "Natalie is a wonderful talent and I am happy to be a part of her debut film. I understand people's concerns regarding returning to activities we all loved prior to COVID-19. I hope everyone will listen to scientists' recommendations and consider others' health and safety while enjoying the movie theater experience."
July marks a big moment for the film industry. Some of the most anticipated films of the year including Disney's live-action "Mulan," Warner Brother's "Tenet" and Russell Crowe's "Unhinged" will all hit theaters.
The announcement of Sony's "Broken Hearts Gallery" release comes after the news of the sale of their Tom Hanks movie, "Greyhound" to Apple TV+ due to the pandemic.
"Instead of pushing ['Greyhound'] well into next year, there were many streamers who were very avid for it, and Apple was extremely excited about it," Rothman said. "Apple was a really, really good home for that particular film. In the case of 'Greyhound,' making a deal with Apple made sense, but that is not our overall business."
Some film distributors are pivoting in the midst of the pandemic. Berry Meyerowitz, the president of film distributor Quiver, said he and his team made the decision to switch up their strategy when it came to the release of their Kevin James thriller, "Becky" by securing over 40 drive-in theaters across the country, along with streaming and on-demand.
"We feel like we're giving consumers and the audience the best of both worlds as they can," he said. "If they're close to one of the drive-ins to go see it there, which is just an amazing nostalgic experience, but also if they're not close to a drive-in or would rather watch it at home, they can sit on their couch, download the film and have that amazing experience from the comfort of their home."

Sony has released the first trailer for its romantic comedy The Broken Hearts Gallery, which pairs Blockers breakout Geraldine Viswanathan with Stranger Things sensation Dacre Montgomery. Viswanathan plays Lucy, a 20-something art gallery assistant living in New York City, who also happens to be an emotional hoarder. After she gets dumped by her latest boyfriend, Lucy is inspired to create The Broken Heart Gallery, a pop-up space for the items love has left behind. Word of the gallery spreads, encouraging a movement and a fresh start for all the romantics out there, including Lucy herself. The film hails from writer-director Natalie Krinsky, and it’s a project that has been on my radar for several years, as I always liked the premise. It’s instantly relatable, in that just about everyone has been dumped at some point, so heartache is universal. I’m not just an emotional hoarder like Lucy, I’m an actual hoarder, so I, too, keep souvenirs from every relationship I’ve ever been in. Photos, hand-written letters, things like that. It’s a great starting point for a romantic comedy, and I’m a huge fan of Viswanathan, who seems well-matched with Montgomery here. The supporting cast here should yield a scene-stealer or two, as it includes Viswanathan’s Blockers co-star Molly Gordon, as well as Utkarsh Ambudkar, Arturo Castro, Suki Waterhouse, Phillipa Soo, Taylor Hill, SNL‘s Ego Nwodim, and Bernadette Peters. The Broken Hearts Gallery was produced by David Gross, while pop princess Selena Gomez leads an army of executive producers that also includes Jeff Arkuss, Jesse Shapira, Josh Phillips, Chantelle Tabrizi, Andrew Robinson, Mathew Hart, Mandy Teefey, Michelle Knudsen, Laurie May, Noah Segal, Mason Novick and Krinsky herself. Sony will release this movie in theaters on July 17 — one week before Mulan, and two weeks before Tenet. It will follow the Russell Crowe thriller Unhinged by one week, so by then, we should have a better sense of whether American audiences are ready to return to theaters. Actor Selena Gomez is known for her work on stage and screen, but has also made a name for herself as a producer. A project she worked on, teen drama 13 Reasons Why, earned a lot of media scrutiny for broaching taboo subjects. Discover why Gomez still believes making the controversial TV series was worthwhile. http://instagram.com/p/BQQ4SZxDVcG The first project Gomez spearheaded was 13 Reasons Why, which ended up as a scripted series at Netflix. “My mom found this book in 2009 and worked her a** off to make it with me, guide me and tell this story authentically,” she wrote on Instagram of the novel upon which the show is based. It took several years, but what was initially planned to be a film starring Gomez turned into the series fans know today, starring Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette, and many more. While she doesn’t act in it, Gomez wrote a song, “Back to You,” that served as promotion for the second season. The show has been deemed controversial http://instagram.com/p/BPsYyTMAHX9 13 Reasons Why aired for four seasons on Netflix. From the get-go, the subject matter drew criticism, as it focuses on the aftermath of a teenage girl who died by suicide. The end of the first season included the scene in which Langford’s Hannah cuts her wrists in the bathtub, which was later edited to show less of the graphic image. Regardless of this change (which didn’t occur until after season 2’s release), many still took issue with the show’s content. There are a handful of scenes in which rape or sexual assault is depicted, and some believe that 13 Reasons Why became too melodramatic and was guilty of romanticizing sensitive subjects. But despite everything, from the years of work to the controversy, Gomez takes a positive stance on 13 Reasons Why. “Whether uncomfortable or not, viewed as inappropriate or not, it has created conversation,” she told Allure in her September 2020 cover story. “And I feel like it was important for me to do.” http://instagram.com/p/BSr1S4vgrQ5
