Fans of reigning world and Olympic champion Alina Zagitova have lambasted the International Skating Union (ISU) after it was revealed their idol was not included in the list of nominees for a set of prestigious skating awards. The newly introduced awards, which have already been dubbed “Oscar of figure skating”, will be held on July 11 and will name the best Skaters, Coaches and Choreographers in seven categories: most valuable skater, best costume, most entertaining program, best newcomer, best choreographer, best coach, lifetime achievement award. Fans, journalists and ISU members were allowed to vote for their candidate by February 10, before a committee comprised of famous figure skaters shortlisted the top three candidates in each nomination. http://instagram.com/p/CBvXSzkgJ52 The inaugural ceremony was set to take place in Montreal during the 2020 ISU World Championship, but was rescheduled for July after the global event was cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis. On Monday, the ISU released the ceremony’s trailer featuring skaters chosen for nominations, which surprisingly missed out Zagitova. The fact didn’t go unnoticed by the skater’s fans, who bombarded the ISU’s social media pages with angry messages accusing the governing body of disrespect, a biased approach and even corruption. http://instagram.com/p/CBz-CUqKjX4 Later, Ari Zakarian, the organizer of the inaugural ceremony, confirmed that Zagitova didn’t enter the top-three list of nominees, citing some unclear problems with the skater’s team apparently referring to technical moments they failed to settle with her representatives. Zakarian’s statement led to an uproar among Zagitova’s supporters, who suggested that he purposely excluded Zagitova from the nominees, being an agent of her rival Evgenia Medvedeva.

European silver medalist Anna Shcherbakova, who is coached by Tutberidze, was nominated for the “Best Costume” as her color-changing ‘Firebird’ dress became a huge sensation this season. Her teammate Alena Kostornaia who won all major awards during her senior debut, including the European title, will fight for the “Best Newcomer” award alongside Alexandra Trusova who left Eteri Tutberidze’s group in May. Tutberidze’s former star Evgenia Medvedeva who quit the group right after the 2018 Olympics was included on the list of nominees in the “Most Entertaining Costume” category. http://instagram.com/p/CCGvqN5qF3- Her tender ‘Memoirs of a geisha’ routine was widely recognized as one of her best programs ever performed on the international stage. And in what seems to be quite a logical choice, Tutberidze herself was nominated for the “Best Coach” award after her skaters swept the podium at the two biggest competitions of the season (ISU Grand Prix Final and the European championship), leaving behind all other competitors. http://instagram.com/p/CCLkxQxKGCw The newly introduced awards, which have already been dubbed the “Oscars of figure skating,” will be held on July 11 with the organizers arranging a live stream of the event which will be available all over the world. Not all figure skating lovers were satisfied by the ISU’s choices with the body being lambasted by Alina Zagitova’s fans who were infuriated by the absence of their idol in the list of nominees.

Hanyu Yuzuru claimed the top honour at the first ISU Skating Awards on Saturday (11 July). The double Olympic champion was named Most Valuable Skater for the 2019/20 season ahead of his perennial rival Nathan Chen and four-time world ice dance champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron. http://instagram.com/p/CCgwHTxHqVt After his defeat to Chen at the Grand Prix Final and second place to Uno Shoma at the Japanese nationals, Hanyu reverted to the programs which won him his second Olympic title at PyeongChang 2018 and won the Four Continents in Seoul to complete a 'Super Slam' of major international titles. With a huge fanbase around the world, the Japanese remains the biggest draw in figure skating and admitted that the buzz surrounding him has its downside. http://instagram.com/p/CCgjJORH1AV Speaking during the virtual awards ceremony, Hanyu said, "For me personally, all the eyes and voices from the fans are added pressure for me. I always sense their expectation and their pressure, even if it's just a practice. To be honest, sometimes it's tough. But this pressure actually makes me stronger. "It would be terrible if no one expected anything from me. Of course, I can't always deliver at 100 percent but what I always try to do is respond to their expectation at a 120-percent level." http://instagram.com/p/CCgi93jn0GP When asked if he had any advice for skaters of the next generation, Hanyu replied, "Each skater has their own style, what they want to express... what they want to be able to do are so different to each other. That's why I am in no position to give advice. I just want to enjoy the best figure skating from the world's top skaters." "In almost every moment of my daily life, I'm constantly thinking about figure skating and I'm always hoping to become better and stronger." - ISU Most Valuable Skater award winner Hanyu Yuzuru
