The Fourth of July 2020 holiday is Saturday, July 4.
It’s an American holiday that became a tradition in the 18th century during the American Revolution. On July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson, after the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence.
Celebratory traditions usually include attending parades, watching fireworks and family barbecues. This year, however, due to the coronavirus, families might opt to stay home and instead watch Hamilton on Disney Plus.
Here is everything to know about what’s open and what’s closed on the Fourth of July 2020.
Is the Fourth of July a federal holiday?
Yes. The Fourth of July is the fifth federal and state holiday of the year.
However, because the holiday falls on a Saturday, many businesses and offices observe Friday, July 3 as the official holiday.

This Fourth of July, a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows that no matter how polarized they might be politically, Americans finally seem to agree on something: that everything about America is getting worse. In his 1989 farewell address, President Ronald Reagan famously described the United States as a “shining city on a hill” — a beacon of hope and a model for the rest of the world. According to the Yahoo News/YouGov survey, which was conducted between June 29 and July 1, a majority of Americans (52 percent) believe that Reagan’s remark was accurate at the time he said it; only 21 percent disagree. Yet today a staggering 62 percent of Americans say the U.S. is no longer that shining city on a hill. Just 17 percent say it still is. “I am in Texas, COVID-19 is on the rise, and there’s quite a lot of anxiety,” said poll respondent Alexandra Foulks, a 62-year-old native of France who now lives in Dallas with her husband. Foulks scoffed at the notion of America as the proverbial “shining city on a hill.” “We are banned from Europe right now,” she said. “How could we be shining?” Overall, the poll found the American people in a historically pessimistic mood heading into a holiday weekend traditionally marked by family cookouts and fireworks displays — events that have been canceled across the country in the midst of a surging coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 128,000 Americans and is currently infecting more than 50,000 each day.

Let freedom ring! Celebrities such as Miranda Lambert, Bethenny Frankel and Chrissy Teigen celebrated the 4th of July with fun in the sun and plenty of red, white and blue. Lambert, 36, shared a photo via Instagram on Saturday, July 4, of herself and her husband, Brendan McLoughlin, hanging out at the pool. The “Bluebird” singer sat in a flamingo floatie as she held her dog, Delta Dawn. The former New York City police officer, 29, posed next to her while wearing a pair of blue and pink swim trunks. “Happy 4th y’all!!!” she captioned the photo. “Delta Dawn says don’t forget to put your pets somewhere safe tonight before the fireworks. #muttnation #flamingorides #happycamper.” The couple’s Airstream trailer can be seen in the background of the picture. In May, the pair – who wed in January 2019 – embarked on a road trip in the trailer. They traveled 1,000 miles in six days from Nashville to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, then to Virginia and Pennsylvania, before they finally arrived in New York City. http://instagram.com/p/CCOv-vgJo1B Meanwhile, stars such as Frankel, 49, Goldie Hawn and Julia Roberts showed off the special men in their lives.
