Few sportspersons are associated with glamour and fashion but tennis star Sania Mirza, who walked the ramp at the India International Jewellery Week (IIJW), contends she has the same wishes and desires as a normal girl, despite being in a challenging sport. "I am a sportsperson but I'm a girl first. And that's why I'm fond of jewellery just like any other girl. Being a sportsperson doesn't mean that I don't have desires and wishes that other women have," she said on the show's opening day in Monday. Sania, who also said that she is excited about walking the ramp at the IIJW, is no stranger to fashion though, having walked the ramp in various types of outfits at shows like Blenders Pride Fashion Tour, Indian Bridal Fashion Week, and Global Fashion Show among others. Sania displayed the collection of designer Moni Agarwal for her brand, "Zohrakshi". The IIJW will go on till Thursday. It is the sixth edition of the the show launched in 2010 to showcase India's finest in jewellery in terms of design and innovation. Sania also said that she is proud about her Wimbledon victory with Swiss star Martina Hingis. The Grand Slam win was also her first doubles title in the women's category. Previously she had won three mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.

Martina Hingis earned her 11th Grand Slam women's doubles title and second at the U.S. Open. Already a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Hingis paired with Sania Mirza of India to beat Casey Dellacqua of Australia and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-3 in the U.S. Open final Sunday. The title comes 18 years after the 34-year-old Hingis' first in doubles, at the Australian Open, and 17 years after the Swiss star won her other doubles championship at Flushing Meadows. Asked how to compare her game now to back when she won with Jana Novotna at the U.S. Open in 1998, Hingis said: "It's different. I try to make the maximum out of my potential. I think I do volley better than I used to. ... I don't have to worry about the baseline game — I've got Sania there." Hingis also won the U.S. Open mixed doubles title this year with Leander Paes. Hingis and Mirza only began playing as a team in March, and now they've won a second Grand Slam trophy in a row, after Wimbledon in July. "From the start, we hit it off," Hingis said. "Our games just really complement each other." She and Mirza were seeded No. 1 in New York. Dellacqua and Shvedova were seeded fourth.

The unstoppable Mirza-Hingis pair came up with another stupendous performance on Sunday to win the women's doubles title at the prestigious $7 million WTA Finals in Singapore. This is the top ranked pair's ninth title together this season, having also won in Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, US Open (New York), Wimbledon (London), Charleston, Miami and Indian Wells. Sania also won at the Sydney International in January with American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. "It was a dream run for me. Never thought I would win 10 titles in a year but I was confident on my ability to perform on each game and it paid off. Credit also goes to Martina the way she played and partnered me in the doubles. We complement each other very well in all aspects," Sania, who was named brand ambassador of pain reliever brand, Volini, told IANS in an interview here. Speaking on his on-field chemistry with the 35-year-old Swiss veteran, Sania couldn't keep herself from heaping praise on her doubles partner. "Martina is a great champion. She is such a nice human being. We get along with each other very well. She at this age has proved yet again what a player she has been over the years and still now. I love playing with her and hope to continue winning more titles along with her," she said.
