The Bitter Truth is the first original full length album from Evanescence since they dropped their self-titled record in 2011 with the Synthesis album (a reimagining of existing songs alongside a pair of new ones) serving as a stopgap between the two.
On "Yeah Right," singer Amy Lee takes a cynical jab at Evanescence's experience as a cog in the machine that is the music industry. On the track, which teeters between a restrained industrial groove and a free-flying chorus, Lee mocks the idea of fair financial compensation for the sacrifices artists make, understanding that it is likely to never happen.
Evanescence have spent the last couple years discussing the inevitability of a new album. Three new songs — "Wasted on You," "The Game Is Over" and "Use My Voice" — and an album title — The Bitter Truth — already came this year and now fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the record will officially come out March 26 in 2021. A fourth single, "Yeah Right," has also just been released.

With Evanescence’s highly-anticipated new album The Bitter Truth finally on the horizon, vocalist Amy Lee has hinted at the scope of where things go sonically following recent single Yeah Right.
When asked by Kerrang! if their latest“curveball” is the“biggest surprise” on the record, Amy reveals,“I think there’s definitely more where that came from…
“When making a complete album, especially after all this time, I always want to just put out a statement, like,‘This is where we’re at, this is who we are’ – it has to be a whole spectrum of emotions and reflections that make up who you are, who the band is,” she continues.“So far, I feel like each song that we put out is a very different colour of the spectrum and there are more colours yet to come, for sure.”
Discussing the band’s latest single in particular, Amy explains,“Yeah Right has been a long time coming; I started that song a decade ago. It was mostly there, it had been at the top of the pile for a really, really long time – we’ve always had a cool pile of extra scraps and pieces of unfinished songs. That’s just one that kept on not plugging in, and then something happened this year when we got together and started playing and pulling songs together in pre-production – I was like,‘I finally know how we can make it work!’ It’s one of those songs that we’re going to have to figure out how to do live because I don’t want to be glued to the moog the whole time. It might be a good time to whip out the keytar!”
Reflecting on The Bitter Truth’s creative process throughout the hardships of last year, she enthuses: “I’m really, really, really proud of what we did with our time [in 2020]. It’s been for hard everybody mentally feeling the weight of the world and, to some degree, our mortality. Some days just getting out of bed in the morning has been difficult, so the fact that we made an album, and we made a great album, means I’m always going to look back on [the] year and feel a big sense of pride.”
The Bitter Truth is due out on March 26, 2021.

The Bitter Truth, the fifth full-length from Evanescence set for release in March 2021, will be their first album of new material in a decade. The American arena group led by singer/keyboardist Amy Lee had already released three singles, though the record’s completion was stalled by the virus pandemic that dominated headlines for much of the year. The first sessions took place at the beginning of 2020 with rock super producer Nick Raskulinecz [Foo Fighters, Rush, Alice In Chains] in his Nashville studio, spawning the tracks we’ve heard so far – Wasted On You, The Game Is Over and Use My Voice. Then, of course, came Covid, putting an end to safe travel and forcing virtually all plans to change. For the members in America, it was incredibly problematic. For German guitarist Jen Majura, who joined in 2015, it was an absolute nightmare. Nevertheless, the group kept chiseling away and fleshing out their parts for album number five. When Guitar World tracks down Majura and co-guitarist Troy McLawhorn towards the end of 2020, things are still very much in the process of being finalized... Looking back now, that session in Nashville must feel like a very long time ago! Majura: “Definitely! What hit me so hard was that we’d recorded that first chunk of songs and waved goodbye at the airport, thinking we’d be back in a couple of weeks. And then suddenly this pandemic hit, airports were all shut! “I had never felt more apart from my friends in the States than since this all started. It’s so unnatural for me not to be there! I’m very old-school – I like my tube amp and 4x12 cabinet. I like to sit in the studio with the humans I’m working with and creating in the moment. “Being away from Amy and the boys while working on material has felt so unnatural to me, but that’s the we have to do it and we have to make the best out of it. The time we spent with Nick in Nashville was the happiest ever.

As Evanescence gear up to unveil their long-awaited new album The Bitter Truth this year, Amy Lee tells Kerrang! that she’s doing everything she can to make the record as a whole an absolute must-have for fans.
“Right now I’m just wanting to make the package and all the extras, everything the fans could ever want and more while there’s still time to add things to it,” she reveals cryptically. When asked about the details, Amy adds, “The only reason I’m not being more specific is because I don’t want to fail and be like, ‘Oh, sorry, I tried to be that awesome thing I said, but I didn’t have enough content.’ I’m just trying to make something almost like an audio making of moment.
“There’s so much that goes into this whole process. I’ve got so many little pieces of audio. There’s tons of stuff that didn’t get used. It started with the voice notes because that’s how I write vocals a lot nowadays. I just have hundreds of those. If you were just to listen to those all in a row, I feel like that would be very boring after a while. I have a lot that are like eight seconds. So it’s like, ‘Oh, cool, that’s the melody of Wasted On You.’ There’s just a bunch of extra stuff. And I’m not positive what the limit of that is yet. I haven’t decided but I’m just collecting as much stuff as I can. So let’s see what can happen here!”
And it doesn’t just sound like fans can be surprised by these Bitter Truth packages, either; Amy hints that there are some sonic curveballs to come on the LP: “When making a complete album, especially after all this time, I always want to just put out a statement, like, ‘This is where we’re at, this is who we are’ – it has to be a whole spectrum of emotions and reflections that make up who you are, who the band is. So far, I feel like each song that we put out is a very different colour of the spectrum and there are more colours yet to come, for sure.”

During a recent chat with Kerrang!, EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee was asked if the band's latest single "Yeah Right" was a good indication of the kind of "curveballs" fans can expect from the band's upcoming album "The Bitter Truth". She responded: "I think there's definitely more where that came from…
"When making a complete album, especially after all this time, I always want to just put out a statement, like, 'This is where we're at, this is who we are' — it has to be a whole spectrum of emotions and reflections that make up who you are, who the band is," she continued. "So far, I feel like each song that we put out is a very different colour of the spectrum and there are more colors yet to come, for sure."
Regarding the most recent single, Amy said: "'Yeah Right' has been a long time coming; I started that song a decade ago. It was mostly there, it had been at the top of the pile for a really, really long time. We've always had a cool pile of extra scraps and pieces of unfinished songs. That's just one that kept on not plugging in, and then something happened this year when we got together and started playing and pulling songs together in pre-production — I was, like, 'I finally know how we can make it work!' It's one of those songs that we're going to have to figure out how to do live because I don't want to be glued to the Moog the whole time. It might be a good time to whip out the keytar."
EVANESCENCE's first album of original music in a decade, "The Bitter Truth" will be released on March 26 via BMG.
Fans can pre-order a digital version, CD, vinyl and a limited-edition deluxe fan box set featuring a bonus CD, journal, poster and special cassette of exclusive audio from the making of "The Bitter Truth". Every pre-order will automatically come with downloads of already-released songs "Wasted On You", "The Game Is Over", and "Use My Voice", as well as "Yeah Right".
"The Bitter Truth" is an epic, guitar-driven collection inspired by the (often-bitter) realities of the 21st Century and our world. The already-released songs have received early accolades from Elle, Billboard, SPIN, American Songwriter, and more, and showcase the "ferocious and hymnal" (The New York Times) sound that made EVANESCENCE a household name, as well as the drama and powerhouse vocals that made Amy Lee "one of rock's definitive voices" (Rolling Stone).
EVANESCENCE's new music was produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who also worked on 2011's self-titled LP.
On the topic of "The Bitter Truth" album title, Amy previously told Rock Sound: "As the lyrics had started to form, and just my feeling in this moment in general, there's a big theme of disillusionment for me. Just growing up and seeing that fairy tales aren't really real. And it's hard to be a grownup — it really is. Because somebody else isn't in charge, we really have to be able to make our own decisions, find out our own information, protect ourselves. People die — we're all going to. There's no magic castle. So that sounds like a lot of doom and gloom when I say it, but there's a choice to accept that truth and live in it and embrace it and choose to live and choose to live in a moment, and the choice to just give up. And there's a struggle there, but my choice is most definitely to take that pill."
