A golden statue of Donald Trump that has caused a stir at the annual US gathering of conservatives was made in Mexico – a country the former president frequently demonized. The statue is larger than life, with a golden head and Trump’s trademark suit jacket with white shirt and red tie. Video and pictures of the tribute being wheeled through the halls of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando, Florida, went viral on Friday. The conference is seen as a vital gathering of the Republican right, and this year has become a symbol of Trump’s continued grip on the party, despite being cast out of office after two impeachments, seemingly endless parades of scandals and a botched response to the coronavirus pandemic that has cost half a million lives in the US. Now the artist behind the huge statue of Trump – Tommy Zegan – has revealed that the object was made in Mexico; a country that has been the target of much Trump racist abuse over his political career, and somewhere he has literally sought to build a wall against. “It was made in Mexico,” Zegan told Politico’s Playbook newsletter. Zegan, who lives in Mexico on a permanent resident visa, described the transport of the monument to CPAC in full to Playbook. Politico reported: “Zegan spent over six months crafting the 200lb fiberglass statue with the help of three men in Rosarito. He transported it to Tampa, Florida, where it was painted in chrome, then hauled it from there to CPAC.”

Former President Donald Trump plans to reaffirm his leadership of the Republican Party and sharply criticize President Biden for an early focus on immigration policy and "identity politics" in his speech Sunday, the first major speech of his post-White House life. While the former president is expected to call out some of his most vocal critics, including Congresswoman Liz Cheney, he has no plans to announce a 2024 campaign to win back the presidency, a senior adviser to Mr. Trump tells CBS News. Mr. Trump's hotly anticipated speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida will serve as the formal launch of an unprecedented moment in modern American history: Not since Grover Cleveland lost his reelection bid in 1889 has a one-term president left office cultivating and encouraging such a large political following. "We are in uncharted territory because no other former one-term presidents in modern times have ever had as large a post-election following," said the senior adviser, who requested anonymity to speak frankly. Mr. Trump's remarks in Orlando are expected to focus on two main pillars: First, strong attacks on Mr. Biden and concerns that the far left of the Democratic Party is controlling the White House and administration policy. Secondly, Trump will focus on his hopes for the future of the Republican Party and the conservative movement. The former president, who used to rely on social media to air his grievances and attack perceived rivals, is expected to use his remarks on Sunday to settle some scores.

Former President Trump won the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll on Sunday, with 55 percent of respondents saying they would vote for him in a hypothetical 2024 primary.
In the straw poll that demonstrated Trump's hold on the GOP, 21 percent said they’d vote for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and 4 percent said they’d go with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R).
Almost 7 in 10 of the poll’s participants said they would like to see Trump run for president in 2024, compared with 15 percent who said they would not and 17 percent who said they were unsure.
Ninety-five percent said they want the Republican Party to continue with Trump’s agenda and policies, with 3 percent saying the GOP should change direction and 2 percent saying they were uncertain.
