Rosé of BLACKPINK has revealed she was “intimidated” the first time she met her fellow groupmates.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Australian-Korean singer spoke about when she first joined YG Entertainment and met her then-future groupmates – Jennie, Lisa and Jisoo. “I was the new one, I was like the newbie,” she said. “I walked in and there was just like a bunch of girls, like quite a lot of them in a room, and I remember just feeling so intimidated.”
However, Rosé added that she soon forged fast friendships with her fellow members, who helped her get used to the culture and with dance lessons in her trainee days. “There’s this choreography that we have to learn, kind of like the basics, and [Jennie] was teaching me,” she said.
“She was like, ‘In Korea, you have to do this, and you have to call people by this and that’, and letting me know about all these cultures that I thought I knew about – but obviously I didn’t.”
The singer also noted that Lisa was the first member she met and shared more about their connection as foreigners in Korea. “Lisa was this girl from Thailand and – so I was away from home, and she was away from home too, and so we had that in common,” Rosé said.

Sitting down with Rolling Stone to talk about some of the biggest “firsts” in her life and career, BLACKPINK‘s Rosé recalled her first impressions of each fellow member when she joined YG Entertainment in 2012. When Rosé passed YG Entertainment’s global audition and traveled from her hometown of Melbourne, Australia to Seoul, South Korea, she was just 15 years old. Talking to Rolling Stone, Rosé explained that she was the newest future BLACKPINK member to join the company as a trainee. Given her age, Rosé’s parents had to drop her off at the company. When she walked in, she revealed she was intimidated by the numerous female trainees she’d soon be learning alongside. Thankfully, while the girls may have looked intimidating, they were sweethearts on the inside. First, Rosé recalled her first experiences with Jennie. Jennie joined YG Entertainment in 2010 and dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer as a child, so it should come as no surprise that she was already a dance whiz by the time Rosé joined them. Rosé, on the other hand, has never danced before becoming a trainee. [Jennie] was like, ‘In Korea, you have to do this. You have to call people like this and that.’ She was letting me know about all these cultures that I thought I knew about, but I obviously didn’t. That was her. — Jennie

BLACKPINK‘s Rosé is known for being a capable bilingual idol who is fluent in both Korean and English. Since she’s so good at both, fans have wondered which is the one she learned first. During her birthday live broadcast, a BLINK asked if she spoke Korean when she lived in Australia, and she answered in the affirmative. Yes, since birth. — Rosé Contrary to what some may think—including herself back in the day—her first language was actually Korean and not English. Well, I thought my first language is English. But my first language could be Korean, in some ways. — Rosé For Rosé, knowing two languages was as natural as breathing. Since her family was a big influence on her young self, she followed their lead at all times. My parents spoke Korean at home. It’s a bit ambiguous. Anyways, I learned languages from my parents and big sister. They all spoke Korean. You don’t go to school as soon as you were born, and my parents and sister are Korean. All of my family members are Korean, so we speak Korean at home. — Rosé

BLACKPINK member Rosé has embarked on her solo career and set two new Guinness World Records titles with her debut single "On The Ground". The Korean-New Zealand singer reached number one on both the Global Billboard 200 and Billboard Global Excl. US on March 27, having previously topped the Global Excl. US chart with "Lovesick Girls" as a member of BLACKPINK with bandmates Jisoo, Jennie and Lisa. This makes her the first artist to reach number one on a Billboard Global chart as a soloist and as part of a group. Announcing her first solo venture in June 2020, Rosé released her debut album R on March 12 with two lead singles. The music video for "On The Ground" premiered via YouTube on the same day and subsequently became the most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a solo K-pop artist with 41.6 million views. It shattered the previous record held by PSY at 36 million views for the worldwide hit, "Gangnam Style". BLACKPINK formed in 2016 and quickly shot to super-stardom - they currently hold the records for the most viewers for the premiere of a video on YouTube and the most viewers for the premiere of a music video on YouTube with one of their biggest hits "How You Like That". Rosé, real name Roseanne Park, was the last member to join the band, with her arrival announced just two months before their debut album Square One.
