In the past two years we’ve had Taylor Swift share her life in Miss Americana, the damage done to Britney Spears examined in Framing Britney and the unique family dynamics of Billie Eilish revealed in The World’s A Little Blurry. Soon, we’ll have Charli XCX and Pink getting in on the act with Alone Together and All I Know So Far.
But, before that, we have one of the most highly anticipated tales being delivered in bite-size pieces over the next fortnight. The four-part Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil (the first two 23-minute installments of which are now streaming for free on YouTube) has the former Barney & Friends and Disney child star- turned-singer open up about the traumatic events of July 23, 2018.
That’s when a drug overdose almost cost the Albuquerque-born performer her life and left her with blind spots in her vision, after she suffered three strokes, a heart attack and multiple organ failure during the incident.
Aimed at “setting the record straight”, Devil has Lovato open up about her estranged relationship with her late abusive, addicted, alcoholic father, opine that childhood involvement in beauty pagentry damaged her self-esteem and how strict rules put in place to maintain her sobriety and the “pressure cooker” of control exerted by the music industry to look a certain way and be a role model, led to her “act of rebellion”, which first ended six years of being drink and drug-free and then spiralled spectacularly out of control.
As well as these extensive direct-to-camera confessionals, we also get input from her entourage of staff, family and friends (and neurologist), who aim to provide insight into her state of mind leading up to that fateful day and fill in the details of how it all played out.
