On Thursday, Olivia Rodrigo dropped her new track, ‘Deja Vu,’ and fans think she’s once again singing about her rumored ex, Joshua Bassett, and his reported new girlfriend, Sabrina Carpenter. Of course, the new song follows the 18-year-old ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ star’s popular single ‘Driver’s License,’ which many fans theorized was about the rumored love triangle. Olivia Rodrigo is at it again! Three months after making headlines for seemingly writing “Drivers License” about her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar Joshua Bassett, fans are convinced she’s continuing the narrative with her new single, “Deja Vu.” “I really like descriptive, narrative-based songwriting, so we tried to do that in the verses and paint pictures of all the specific things that you do in a relationship,” the 18-year-old musician told American Songwriter ahead of the Thursday, April 1, release. “I thought it’d be interesting to write a song, using deja vu, about how sometimes when somebody moves on in a relationship and they get with a new partner, you watch it and you’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh, that was all of the stuff that I did.’ I think that’s a really relatable, universal thing.” Rodrigo reportedly dated Bassett, 20, while filming season 1 of the Disney+ series. After their split, he was linked to fellow Disney darling Sabrina Carpenter during the summer of 2020. Social media users were subsequently convinced that Rodrigo penned “Drivers License” about Carpenter after she changed the lyrics from “brunette” to “blonde” before she released the track in January. (She previously teased the song via Instagram months before she recorded it.) “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about,” she sings in the track about the 21-year-old former Girl Meets World star. “I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song,” Rodrigo told Billboard in January as the Carpenter chatter made headlines. “It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important.”

Olivia Rodrigo’s song “deja vu” was released last Thursday. Does she have the potential to become a household name? Despite dropping at the same time as Demi Lovato’s long-awaited album Dancing With The Devil: the Art of Starting Over and “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” by Lil Nas X, she was still able to create a buzz on social media...
Like so many other members of Gen Z, I like Olivia a lot. Her authenticity, connection with her fans on TikTok, and ability to be vulnerable in her art is what draws me to her. It takes a lot of guts to write songs that come straight from the heart like that. She also presents as a super normal girl who could be friends with anyone, which seems to be the trend with celebrities that stick out the most to my age group. Something that makes celebs in our generation different is that they aren’t expected to be someone we want to be. Instead, it’s more like someone that we want to be friends with. So when I saw her get hyped with “drivers license”, I was kind of worried she would be known for that “one” song to the rest of the world. But Olivia’s ability to get this much buzz around “deja vu” shows that she wasn’t going to settle for 15 minutes of fame.
First of all, the song is great. I might even like it a little more than the first one which says a lot because I love the first one. Her voice is unique, which makes it easier to identify her. I’ve also found that the style of music my generation responds to is alternative-pop, which is a huge change from childhood hits like “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO. I want to attribute that change to singers like Billie Eilish and Sabrina Claudio who have shown that you don’t have to have a strong belt in order to have a memorable voice. Olivia has that feathery voice that you hear in a lot of TikTok songs, but a power behind it that makes her stand out. This becomes even more important when you want to get on the radio because unless you sound distinctive, no one who doesn’t know who you are is gonna remember you. And it also goes with the visuals of her music video that was released the same day.
This is pure Gen Z style, with nods to the aesthetic and old-school vibes coming back in our generation’s culture. We’re just trying to tap into the late 90’s and early 00’s vibes, and Olivia delivered. Fun fact: one of the shots in the music video resembles both a scene from icon Celine Dion’s “Falling into You”...

Olivia Rodrigo released the music video for her second single, “deja vu,” on April 1. The music video showed the Disney+ singer driving on the California coast and eating strawberry ice cream. At least, that’s what viewers thought based on the song lyrics. However, despite it looking like a frozen snack, Rodrigo revealed that she was actually eating something much different. Olivia Rodrigo released the ‘deja vu’ music video on April 1 The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star dropped “deja vu” on April 1. She released the song and music video simultaneously after fans obsessed over “drivers license.” The music video featured beautiful scenic imagery of Rodrigo driving, wearing gorgeous outfits, and smashing monitors. The song lyrics referenced a heartbroken person. The narrator saw a past lover making new “reused” memories with another person. Rodrigo, in the clip, watched on as a new person wore the same green dress and pink cardigan as her. The lyrics mentioned strawberry ice cream, being an actress, and listening to Billy Joel. The start and end of the music video paralleled each other. The beginning showcased Rodrigo driving a vintage car with strawberry ice cream. The end showed the other girl doing the very same thing. The “drivers license” singer revealed a behind-the-scenes truth about the food item — it wasn’t actually ice cream. Olivia Rodrigo seemingly ate strawberry ice cream in the clip In the music video, she was seen licking what was supposed to look like strawberry ice cream. The lyrics, per Genius, called out Rodrigo’s favorite ice cream flavor in the first verse and in the bridge. The star sang: “Strawberry ice cream, one spoon for two” and “Strawberry ice cream in Malibu.” Rodrigo revealed on an Instagram Live on April 1 that they didn’t use strawberry ice cream for filming. They actually used mashed potatoes. For logistical reasoning, this makes sense. The amount of time it takes to film a music video would require multiple ice cream cups. The snack would melt. And mashed potatoes wouldn’t. he Good Place, which was a comedy that aired on NBC, also often had frozen yogurt as a prominent prop referenced on the show. The characters frequently ate frozen yogurt in what was their afterlife limbo. The star of the show, Kristen Bell, weighed in on Twitter on how the production filmed those scenes. “It’s actually colored mashed potatoes,” Bell wrote. “They don’t melt in the sun as easily.”

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” was the first big hit of 2021 and it’s no surprise that she followed it up with another catchy tune. “Deja Vu” is a pretty different vibe than “Drivers License” with a video to match the changed tone as well. And interestingly enough, Killing Eve inspired Rodrigo’s video because it’s the singer’s favorite show. In an MTV News interview on April 5, Rodrigo shared that she came up with the concept of the “Deja Vu” video based on Killing Eve’s cat-and-mouse dynamic between Eve Polastri and Villanelle. “For the music video, we kind of didn’t want it to be super on the nose, like relationship-y,” Rodrigo said. “So I thought it would be really fun to do a female stalker-type music video. Because I’m obsessed with Killing Eve. That’s my favorite show of all time.” In Killing Eve’s first season, Eve (Sandra Oh) is put on a case that is set to investigate Villanella (Jodie Comer), a Russian assassin. However, Eve becomes obsessed with Villanelle (and vice versa), and it evolves into a very tension-filled, back-and-forth between the two through three seasons that also includes feelings at some point. For Rodrigo’s video, it’s more on the side of Rodrigo’s character finding the object of her obsession (presumably the girl dating her ex) and watching from afar. She copies a lot of what she does (or the other way around, depending on how you interpret the video/song). Then at the end, the ex leads on that she knew Rodrigo was watching the entire time, which ticks her off. And the roles sort of switch. “I think it really ties into that, ‘Do you get deja vu?’ thing,” Rodrigo said about choosing a Killing Eve inspiration for her video. “Because it’s like these two girls living two really similar lives. Because they wanna be like each other.” In addition to her favorite show inspiring the video, she also gave the advice that your favorite artists should inspire you as well. In fact, it’s her most important writing tip. “Listen to music like a songwriter,” she said. “I have grown exponentially from doing this. I think it is the best way to grow in any way, is to draw on inspiration from people that you look up to.” Rodrigo shared that she listens to her idols’ music, watches their content and interviews, and then writes songs based on what they might make. “And it just completely broadens your horizons,” she said. “And helps your music gets that much better.” Of her idols, she named Taylor Swift as a massive inspiration, which is no surprise. She said that Swift paints pictures in an inspiring way and Rodrigo loves her storytelling and narrative songwriting.

What Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License" giveth, it also taketh away -- at least from her bank account -- because the singer just got nailed with a parking ticket!!! Rodrigo catapulted to the top of the charts with the single earlier this year ... but just learned one of the harsh realities of driving in Los Angeles and just about every other big city -- no matter how hard you try -- eventually, you're gonna get hit with a parking violation. While it's not clear just what Olivia was ticketed for -- in L.A. there's street sweeping, restricted zones, parking meters, parking passes, we could go on all day -- it appears Olivia is at least having some fun with it. The singer posted a photo of her ticket with the caption, "Damn, this driving s**t ain't all fun and games." You're tellin' us!!!
