Reigning Wimbledon champions Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis earned their third consecutive win to top the red group and enter the semifinals of the year-ending $7 million WTA Finals being played at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore on Friday.
Following their victories in the opening two round robin matches earlier this week, the Indo-Swiss tennis combine came up with another top-class performance to beat Hungarian-French fourth seeds Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 7-5 in one and a half hours.
Playing on hard courts, Sania, who won the prestigious tournament last year with Zimbabwe’s Cara Black, and Martina earned five breakpoint opportunities in the first set. They converted one which was enough to seal the set and take the lead in the contest.

The two-time Wimbledon champion had sneaked into the last four on Friday, but she showed her class during a 6-3 7-6 triumph over Sharapova. Despite a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Sharapova impressed during the group stages in Singapore, but she found herself second best to Kvitova during the first set. The Czech hitter took full advantage of Sharapova's poor second serve, winning 10 of 14 points to break three times on the way to getting within touching distance of the final. Sharapova responded superbly at the start of the second to race into a 5-1 lead, but Kvitova refused to give up the set, fighting back to force a tie-break. Her Russian opponent gained the early mini-break but Kvitova reeled off seven of the next eight points to earn a place in the final, where she will play Agnieszka Radwanska after the Pole beat Garbine Muguruza earlier on Saturday.

Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska captured the biggest title of her career Sunday as she beat Petra Kvitova for the WTA Finals crown in Singapore. Radwanska prevailed 6-2 4-6 6-3 after a tense battle, claiming the final three games of the deciding set with solid, virtually mistake-free play. "It means everything. It couldn't be any better. I think that was the biggest day in my life," she told the official WTA website. Radwanska only secured a place in the eight-strong elite field after a late season surge and then went 1-2 in the round robin section to scrape into the semifinals.

The WTA tennis season closes in China this week with Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki leading a strong field for the maiden Elite Trophy Zhuhai. The round robin tournament replaces the WTA Tournament of Champions to feature 12 singles players, 11 ranked between No11-21 and Chinese wildcard Zheng Saisai, who have been split into four groups of three. The winner of each group will advance to the semi-finals for a chance to pick up £162,000 in prize money and 700 ranking points. Top seed in Zhuhai is seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, who has been drawn in Group A with her compatriot Madison Keys and wildcard Saisai. 'I can't wait to play and be part of the last event of the year,' said Williams. 'The tournament has done a fantastic job of welcoming us and letting all of China know about it. I'm just ready to get out there!'

Top-seeded Venus Williams beat Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 7-6 (6) to win the WTA Elite Trophy on Sunday. Pliskova had a set point at 6-5 in the tiebreaker but Williams hit back-to-back forehand winners to close out the win. ''Seven weeks here in Asia and now I feel like it's my home,'' Williams said. ''I'm so excited to win the first trophy in Zhuhai. All the players felt so welcome here and we appreciated all of the enthusiasm.'' With her third win of the year, Williams returns to the top 10 for the first time in more than four years.
