Sometimes, art imitates life, and other times, life imitates art. Some combo of the two things ended up happening with this season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which debuted a few months after the spectacular rise of its star, Olivia Rodrigo. She debuted her single "drivers license" in January and quickly took the world by storm, both because it's a great song and because it seemed to indicate some personal life drama with HSMTMTS co-star Joshua Bassett that people could not get enough of. The song shot to the top of the charts and became viral enough for a whole Saturday Night Live sketch to be centered around it. Rodrigo then released a few more hit singles before dominating the charts with her album Sour, and performing on SNL herself. In the past seven months, she has become a massive star, eclipsing Bassett and the rest of her castmates in the world outside of High School Musical. High School Musical Cast: Where Are They Now? So of course, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season two featured a storyline about Rodrigo's character, Nini, going viral with a song she wrote—or at least as viral as you can really go in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the show is set. It causes a rift in her relationship with Bassett's character Ricky, and leads to a break-up and a burgeoning music career. Series creator Tim Federle just needs people to know that season two was written long before "drivers license" was even a thing. "I think there's something sort of magical about writing. Like, my whole career, there's certain things you write and you think it means nothing, and then the universe shows you something, and you're like, that's crazy, that coincidence," he tells E! News. "I appreciate you knowing how far in advance we write these things, because I think we never would have been so obvious."

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series just finished its second season on Disney+ with Olivia Rodrigo's character Nini having a very similar journey as that of the actress. In season 2, Nini writes 'The Rose Song,' which blows up literally overnight when someone posted a video of it on Instagram. Earlier this year, Rodrigo released her own song 'Drivers License', which became an immediate success on TikTok and the charts. Coincidence? Maybe, but that's not all. While in the show Nini wrestles with balancing her growing stardom and her relationship with Ricky (Joshua Bassett), in real life, Rodrigo's growing stardom meant fans started to speculate about her own personal life and her off-screen entanglements with Bassett. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the series showrunner Tim Federle broke down these similarities and explained the story was planned months before Rodrigo's hit single even saw the light of day. "Man, it's so crazy. We wrote that 'Rose Song' story maybe six or seven months before 'Drivers License' was even released. "With the cadence of how TV rolls out, stuff can feel very fresh, and it was decided or filmed like months and months, if not a year, before. It's a wild amount of symmetry," said Federle. While he admitted that nobody could have predicted Rodrigo's incredibly fast rise to fame – not even her own label – Federle added that he for one never doubted her talent: "I've always been somebody who bet on Olivia Rodrigo. I think she's got a skill that's unmatched and really rare." He then added: "But it's a joy to watch. She deserves it."

"High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" showrunner Tim Federle told Entertainment Weekly that he wouldn't want to bring Olivia Rodrigo back for a third season if it would "stand in the way of" her success. Federle spoke to EW about the launch of Rodrigo's music career and how this may impact her role on the "High School Musical" spin-off show. "It's hard to imagine 'High School Musical' without Olivia, but Olivia is also experiencing a level of success and fame and opportunity that I would never want to stand in the way of," he said. "I want the show to succeed, but the actors who make the show are always more important to me than the product." Federle then sighed before adding: "I want Olivia to be happy. I'd love for her to keep making the show, but at the end of the day I'm there to be both the head cheerleader of my series and also read the moment and say, 'Wow, what Olivia is going through feels so unprecedented that I just want to support her in all of her dreams.'" The series' second season ended on Friday and it is yet to be renewed for a third. Federle said there were "a lot of stories" he would like to tell if the series gets renewed for more seasons. Rodrigo has starred as one of the lead characters, Nini Salazar-Roberts, since the series premiere in 2019. After the first season, Rodrigo started releasing her own music. Her first album, "Sour," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and had the biggest opening week of any album so far this year.
