Olivia Rodrigo was in subversive early 2000s style for her new music video, “Brutal.” The 18-year-old actress wore a variety of Y2K-themed outfits and wigs for the occasion — plus a range of different digital face filters — styled by Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo. However, one look that especially stood out was straight from the early aughts, with a punk rock twist. Rodrigo donned a pale purple pleated skirt with a matching bustier-like top, featuring a black plaid pattern. The set, accented with silver buckled straps and grommets, was layered with a shredded white graphic T-shirt. Her accessories were equally reminiscent of the era, including ombré rimless sunglasses, layered rings, clusters of pastel hair clips (around voluminous double ponytails with pink highlights, no less!) and a pair of Bon Bon Whims’ chunky gold Bloom Bloom hoop earrings. You can view the full look in the video below. http://instagram.com/p/CS7LIerJTvg The “good 4 u” singer further added to her look’s distinct rock n’ roll nature with a pair of towering platform boots (sure to bring any punk rocker instant Hot Topic vibes), most visible in the video when Rodrigo stepped into traffic and walked on top of a car. The lace-up boots featured black leather uppers, as well as buckled straps across their fronts. One of their most notable features were thick black platform soles, making the pair both walkable and extra edgy. The “Brutal” video, directed by Petra Collins, featured an array of stylish outfits embodying different characters in Rodrigo’s Y2K universe. She can be spotted in ensembles reminiscent of early 2000’s pop stars, socialites, anchorwomen, and high school students, including a crop top and denim miniskirt, bold pink blazer and a skintight silver tank top with matching pants. One ensemble even included a vintage Roberto Cavalli dress, worn by Britney Spears in 2003.

Olivia Rodrigo gave fans a "Brutal" reminder of how awful the teenage experience can be with the release of her newest video on Monday (Aug. 23), but is easing the pain by providing fans with a sweet behind-the-scenes look at her time filming on set. http://instagram.com/p/CS9s6aAF3EF Rodrigo posted a photo set of her wearing a pink tutu complete with a black fishnet shawl (matching tights not pictured) to her Instagram Tuesday (Aug. 24). The snaps offer a much more detailed look at the ensemble, compared to the official shot fans got of it in the Petra Collins directed "Brutal" video, where the singer-songwriter is seen falling to her knees during ballet practice. The snap comes less than a day after Rodrigo shared her first behind-the-scenes look from the video of her donning a futuristic silver two-piece set that consisted of a sleeveless zippered vest and flared bottoms, which were accented with a bright highlighter orange wig reminiscent of Leeloo's iconic 'do from 1997's The Fifth Element.

Major fashionistas and celeb tastemakers like Kylie Jenner and Sofia Richie were already wearing the brand’s creative, colorful pieces—and slowly but surely, it’s amassed even more majorly famous fans. As I watched and re-watched the new music video for “Brutal,” I couldn’t help but notice Olivia Rodrigo’s jewelry in one particular scene. The “Brutal” video is, among other things, fantastic. In my opinion, it’s one of the best returns to music video-ing at its core that we’ve seen in a hot minute. And just as good as the concept and storytelling, of course, are the outfits. With portions of her face covered by virtual masks reminiscent of Instagram and Snapchat face filters, Rodrigo let her attire and accessories do the talking for the bulk of the video. That said, there was one piece in particular that stood out. In the classroom scene, Rodrigo paired a punky plaid skirt and a red tank that says “Flirt” with a red beret and braided pigtails. Finishing off the look, she rocked some silver oversized soda tab-style earrings by Pattaraphan and a rectangular, glittery red ring with a black gummy bear on top. That ring, of course, was classic BONBONWHIMS. Like it? Boy oh boy, do I have great news for you: You can snag one for yourself! BONBONWHIMS founder Clare Ngai isn’t one to send celebs exclusive pieces and leave their fans wanting something similar—she always makes sure they can get their hands on the real thing. In the past, fans went positively wild for a clear bubble ring worn by Ariana Grande, so I have no doubt that the aptly-named Brutal Ring will be the brand’s next big seller. TBH, even if I wasn’t a fan of Rodrigo I’d want this ring. Gummy bear jewelry has been trending all summer, but I’ve been worried that the Rainbow Brite color scheme so many brands are pushing would wear itself out by fall. A classic emo-chic color combo like black and red never gets old! I love the thought of rocking this with an otherwise understated monochrome black look as a pop of something fun and quirky. Or, you know, as part of my inevitable Olivia Rodrigo Halloween costume. Her BONBONWHIMS ring isn’t the only fun accessory Rodrigo wears in the video; she also rocks some seriously cute (And affordable! Under $50!) chunky gold hoops with flower detailing by Notte, not to mention a bevy of early aughts-inspired hair clips in the final scene. Unrelated, but I’d go as far as to say that Rodrigo is bringing pigtails back. And strangely, I’m here for it?

Olivia Rodrigo stuns again in vintage Betsey Johnson. The 18-year-old breakout star rocked a ballerina-style tutu dress from the brand in her new music video for "Brutal." The pink dress features a bustier-style top, bow details and a flouncy, voluminous tulle skirt, which was styled with edgy fishnet sleeves. http://instagram.com/p/CS9s6aAF3EF Rodrigo has worn Betsey Johnson's iconic dresses before. She donned a '90s runway archive for the premiere of the Sour Prom Concert Film. http://instagram.com/p/CQwM1y0rRNb The "good 4 u" singer was so stylish in the nostalgic look, featuring the vintage pink printed slip dress with lace details. Olivia Rodrigo has been accused of ‘ripping off’ the Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama after fans noticed similarities between Rodrigo’s music video for ‘Brutal’ and Sawayama’s ‘XS’. The music video for ‘Brutal’ was released on August 23, and features various avatars of Rodrigo with the beginning simulating someone choosing characters in a video game. However, fans and critics were quick to notice similarities between Rodrigo’s video and the video for Sawayama’s ‘XS’ released in April 2020. Some even accused Rodrigo of ripping off the British singer. word for word bar for bar 😭 pic.twitter.com/f1WWzNK3G0 — leoˣ (@ctrlgrlz) August 23, 2021 The video for ‘XS’ features Sawayama selling a product called RINA Water on a shopping channel and doing a promotional video too. ‘XS’ lyrics criticize excessive consumerism and capitalism taking aim at fast fashion and the lives of the ultra-rich. As the video progresses, Sawayama’s character turned out to be a robot while the ‘water’ is extracted from a creature in chains. In ‘Brutal’, one of Rodrigo’s avatars is shown selling water on a television channel while she sings of quitting her job and being exploited, echoing the themes of Sawayama’s song. Rodrigo also sports an orange wig in the video compared to Sawayama who sports orange and black hair in ‘XS’. Look I love Olivia Rodrigo but why does a lot of this feel like a direct rip off of Rina Sawayama visuals? pic.twitter.com/fvbuX6Adjo — steven (@bot2176) August 23, 2021 Other fans also noticed similarities between the pink suit worn by Rodrigo as a newsreader and one of the channel hosts in ‘XS’. Some fans also believed there were similarities in the opening bars of the songs as both songs feature a slow instrumental before a harsh guitar kicks in. Sawayama at the Brit Awards 2021 said in an interview that she was excited to see Rodrigo at the event and added “I stan Olivia Rodrigo.” However, not all the reception has been negative. Vogue described the video as a “visual treat” and a “playfully brash rebellion.” Publications like Insider noted similarities with videos such as Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ and that the video featured actor Lukas Cage from shows like “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus.” Rodrigo has recently had to credit artists such as Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff on her song ‘deja vu’ and Hayley Williams and Josh Farro on ‘good 4 u’. This was after TikToks pointed out similarities between the songs. Rodrigo was also recently criticized for the alleged quality of her Sour merchandise.
