Miss America 2014 was crowned Sunday night in Atlantic City, N.J.: She's Nina Davuluri, the first Indian American to take the crown. It was the second year in a row that a young woman from New York was named Miss America.
Davuluri, 24, competed in outfits including an animal-print bikini (pardon us, swimsuit) and a bright yellow evening gown that she described as "the more sexy version" of Belle's dress in "Beauty and the Beast." In the talent portion of the evening, she delivered a Bollywood-style dance.
Winner Nina Davuluri said: 'I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.
The Syracuse native, the first-ever Indian-American woman to win the coveted beauty pageant crown, addressed the influx of racist comments following her triumph on Sunday, Sept. 15, telling The Associated Press that she will "rise above" her critics. "I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity," she told The AP. "I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America. …I always viewed myself as first and foremost American."
Nina Davuluri enjoys her first day as Miss America.
Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, took the crown in this year's Miss America beauty pageant. It was the 87th year of the competition, and Davuluri was one of two Asian-Americans in the final round. Although she's just a few days into her reign, Davuluri has already made history. She's the first Indian-American Miss America. Miss America told Tell Me More host Michel Martin about the moment she was crowned, redefining American beauty and more.
Only three women from Kansas have ever won the Miss America crown. On Sunday night, for a few fleeting moments, it looked like this year’s Miss Kansas – Theresa Vail – might have a fighting chance to become the fourth. Unfortunately for Theresa, the talent portion was the most heavily weighted portion of the competition, counting for 30 percent. Miss New York Nina Davuluri, who by night's end became the first Miss America of Indian descent, almost certainly sealed it with a beautiful, crowd-pleasing Bollywood fusion dance.
