Oregon State freshman Jade Carey began postseason gymnastics competition in winning fashion, claiming the all-around at the Pac-12 championship meet Saturday at West Valley City, Utah. Carey captured the four-event all-around with a score of 39.725, edging Utah’s Grace McCallum by a half-point. Carey is the Beavers’ fifth all-round conference champion, and first since Leslie Mak won in 2011. Led by Carey, Oregon State placed third in the eight-team meet with a score of 197.250. Utah won the conference title with 198.000, followed by runner-up California at 197.425. UCLA was fourth at 196.950. The NCAA championship meet is April 14-16 in Fort Worth, Texas. Carey, ranked No. 1 nationally in all-around, just missed tying the conference record of 39.80. Hours after she was named as the Pac-12′s gymnast of the year, Carey proved it in the gym, tying for first on floor and tying for second in vault, uneven bars and balance beam. Carey, the 2021 Olympic floor gold medalist, scored 9.95 on floor and beam, 9.925 on bars and 9.90 on vault. OSU senior Madi Dagen placed sixth in all-around at 39.450. Dagen’s best individual finish was a tie for sixth in vault. Oregon State came up short of a season-high team score. The Beavers scored 197.375 against Arizona State during a dual meet in February.

Despite scoring a season-high 197.425, Oregon State’s gymnastics season as a team ended Thursday night at the NCAA Seattle Regional.
Beavers’ freshman Jade Carey continued to be a tour de force, however, as she qualified for the NCAA championship meet by scoring a season-high 39.850 in all-around at the University of Washington.
Oregon State finished third in the regional semifinal, finishing behind Utah and Stanford. The top two teams advance to Saturday championship, where two NCAA championship meet berths are on the line.
Stanford pulled off a stunner in the regional semifinal, as the Cardinal edged OSU by .025 for second. The Cardinal, who hadn’t scored 197 all season and finished eighth in the Pac-12 championship meet, scored 197.450.
Oregon State posted its seventh score of 197 or better this season. Utah won Thursday’s semifinal with a score of 197.800.
Carey’s 39.850 is the second highest all-around score nationally this season. Carey, who is ranked No. 1 nationally in all-round, had a previous best was 39.825.
Carey, the Pac-12 champion, had event scores of 9.975 in vault, beam and floor and 9.925 on uneven bars.
Oregon State’s Madi Dagen and Lauren Letzsch have a chance to advance to the NCAAs in individual events. If Utah places first or second Saturday and qualifies its team, then Dagen (vault) and Letzsch (floor) advance to nationals.
The NCAA meet is April 14-16 in Fort Worth, Tex.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic floor exercise champion has confirmed she will continue to pursue opportunities in elite gymnastics while also competing in the NCAA ranks. Carey told Olympics.com that she'll take part in her a first U.S. national team training camp since winning gold in Tokyo, two weeks after competing in the NCAA Championships. “Right now, I'm still training here at OSU, and we're still trying to figure out some of those details. I will go home to Arizona, but not all the time,” Carey said in an exclusive interview on Wednesday (6 April) when asked about her training arrangements. “There are ways that my dad [and coach Brian Carey] will be able to come up here and help me train, and so that will be nice. “I'm planning to go to camps starting in April, so that will be exciting just to get back there and see everyone,” she continued. “Then, we're planning on [U.S.] championships for sure, unless we feel like I'm not ready. Then, we’ll kind of see about Worlds once we get further down the road.” While plans regarding the 2022 World Championships remain up-in-the-air, she has the Paris 2024 Olympics firmly in her sights. “That’s definitely what I’m going to be aiming towards," she said. Carey also took to social media on Wednesday (6 April) to share her plans. “NCAA gymnastics is and continues to be an incredible experience,” she wrote in the post shared on Twitter and Instagram. “I’m looking forward to competing and representing Oregon State (OSU) at nationals next week. I wouldn’t be here in this moment without my Beaver family. Their endless love and support pushes and inspires me to be a better version of myself.” She’ll be among the favourites at the NCAAs to win the all-around crown after finishing the regular season ranked No. 1 nationally.

Oregon State freshman Jade Carey finished fourth in all-around and second on uneven bars Thursday at the NCAA gymnastics championship meet in Fort Worth, Tex. Carey, the 2021 Olympic gold medalist in floor exercise, scored 39.650 in all-around. The all-around champion was Florida’s Trinity Thomas, who closed with a 10 on floor to score 39.8125. Carey had individual event scores of 9.95 on uneven bars, 9.9 on balance beam, 9.8875 on vault and 9.9125 on floor. Thomas edged Carey on uneven bars, scoring 9.975. Carey was Oregon State’s lone competitor at nationals. Carey’s fourth-place finish is second best all-time at OSU. In 1982, Mary Ayotte-Law placed third. Carey’s 39.650 is an OSU nationals record. Carey is the fourth Beaver to finish second on uneven bars. Carey was on a short list of favorites to win the NCAA all-around. During the regular season, Carey had the nation’s best score and average all-around score. Carey was undefeated in all-around, including regionals. But Carey’s national meet got off to somewhat rocky start with a 9.8875 on vault, the only time she scored less than 9.9 in any event this season. Carey picked it up with high scores in beam and vault, but couldn’t make up ground on floor, one of her two best events.

Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles are planning to be the first U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team members from Tokyo to return to elite competition. Carey and Chiles plan to compete at the national championships in Tampa in three weeks in hopes of making the five-woman team for this fall’s world championships. Carey and Chiles, along with Olympic teammates Suni Lee and Grace McCallum, competed last winter and spring in NCAA gymnastics, which is different from elite. Carey, the Olympic floor exercise champion, and Chiles, part of the silver-medal-winning Olympic team, took part in a USA Gymnastics national team camp two weeks after the NCAA Championships in April. That signaled their intent to return to elite competition. Carey took part in another camp in early July, along with the Olympic all-around champion Lee, who will not return to elite competition before 2023. Simone Biles and McCallum left the door open for returns at some point before the 2024 Paris Olympics but have not taken part in any camps since Tokyo. MyKayla Skinner is the lone member of the team to announce a retirement. Neither Carey nor Chiles entered this Saturday’s U.S. Classic, a tune-up meet for many (but not all) gymnasts with eyes on nationals in Tampa next month. The last U.S. Olympic women’s artistic gymnastics team members to return for the following year’s nationals were McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross in 2013. NBC Sports’ Sarah Hughes (not the figure skater) contributed to this report.
