Eight U.S. athletes are headed to the Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo, Italy, the first Challenger Series event of the 2021-22 season. Competition starts on Friday, Sept. 10, with the women's and men's short programs. The rhythm dance and women's free skate will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11. The event will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 12, with the free dance and men's free skate. In the women's competition, both Alysa Liu and Audrey Shin will make their Challenger Series debuts in Italy. Liu won Cranberry Cup earlier this season and was the pewter medalist at the 2021 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Shin placed fourth at Cranberry Cup and was the Skate America bronze medalist in 2020 (the competition was held as a domestic event due to the pandemic). In the men's competition, Tomoki Hiwatashi and Yaroslav Paniot will represent the United States. Hiwatashi is the 2019 World Junior champion and placed fourth at 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America. Paniot, who formerly skated for Ukraine, is the 2021 U.S. pewter medalist. In ice dance, Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko will make their Lombardia Trophy debut, having finished third at Skate America last season. They will be joined by Molly Cesanek and Yehor Yehorov who will be skating in their first senior international competition abroad. They finished fifth at 2020 Skate America. The Challenger Series is entering its eighth season and is a group of senior-level international competitions that allows athletes to earn points and prepare for Grand Prix and ISU Championship competitions. Nearly three years after Alysa Liu re-wrote the record books to become the youngest U.S. national figure skating champion, the 16-year-old is finally ready for the big time. This 2021–22 season marks the first time the Californian will skate at senior level internationally, after two years of hype followed by a difficult pandemic-affected season. Before Liu makes her Grand Prix debut at Skate Canada at the end of October, she will compete in a few Challenger Series events, and also attempt to win the U.S. team a third Olympic spot in ladies' singles for Beijing 2022. But who exactly is Alysa Liu, and why is there so much hype surrounding her? We take a look below. 2021-22 season: Alysa Liu's senior debut In one of the most eagerly-anticipated non-Russian senior debuts for a while, Liu will finally compete at a senior Grand Prix in Vancouver from 29-31 October. She also has a second Grand Prix assignment at the NHK Trophy, set for Tokyo, Japan, from 12–14 November. Liu began her international senior career at the Cranberry Cup International, a minor non-ISU competition featuring top U.S. skaters as well as South Korea's You Young, and won it. That gained her selection for the first two Challenger Series events of the season, the Lombardia Trophy and the Nebelhorn Trophy. The latter will act as an Olympic qualifier, with Liu needing to place in the top six qualifiers to book a third spot for the U.S. women in Beijing. It might seem like a lot of pressure to put on Liu, and could be an early barometer this year of how she copes with the step up to skating against the world's best. The potential reward is a long-awaited appearance at the Olympic Games.

American sensation Alysa Liu leads the Challenger Series Lombardia Trophy after recording the highest score in the women's short program in Bergamo, Italy on Friday (10 September). Liu, who is competing as a senior in figure skating for the first time this season, was a league above the rest as she racked up 74.31 points after her short program, 12.17 points clear of her closest rival. Switzerland's Alexia Paganini finished second with 62.14 points with Poland's Ekaterina Kurakova in third on 61.51 points. Azerbaijan's Vladimir Litventsev topped the men's short program with a score of 80.83 points, just a fraction ahead of France's Adam Siao Him Fa on 80.54 points. Skaters from Russia were missing on the ice in Italy as they stayed home to compete in the Russia senior test skate event which also takes place this weekend. There were also no Japanese among the field of 32-skaters. The Lombardia Trophy is the first of ten events of the 2021-22 Figure Skating Challenger Series. The series is considered the second tier of international senior events, ranked below the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating which gets underway in October.
