Maiia Khromykh sprung a major surprise early in this Olympic figure skating season, beating reigning world champion Anna Shcherbakova to take the Budapest Trophy on Sunday (17 October). The 16-year-old trailed Shcherbakova by just under two points after Saturday's short program, and had a hand down on her opening quad toe loop. But then she hit a clean quad toe loop in combination with a triple toe loop, her first clean quad in senior international competition, as she exceeded her personal best with 152.09 for a formidable total of 224.91. Shcherbakova, the last skater to go, fell on her opening attempted quad flip and had two double Axels in her routine. Her jumping appeared to lack some of its usual zip, and the 17-year-old - in her first international contest since becoming world champion - scored 147.97 leaving her on 222.73, just over two points behind her fellow Eteri Tutberidze protegee. Sofia Samodurova, European champion in 2019, was a distant third with a total of 190.91. Shcherbakova nodded when she saw that her score had left her in second place, a result which shows just how fierce competition will be for the three ROC berths in Beijing. Kamila Valieva leads the field after her world record at last weekend's Finlandia Trophy. Training partners Alexandra Trusova, Alena Kostornaia, Khromykh and Shcherbakova are also in the hunt as well as 2015 world champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, the only realistic contender who does not train under Tutberidze.
