The Grand Prix of Figure Skating (GP) Final scheduled to open on the 9th in Osaka was canceled due to the suspension of new entry of foreigners due to the spread of the new coronavirus mutant "Omicron strain". I knew it would be on the 2nd. Officials have revealed. It is expected to be announced within the day.
The GP Final is a tournament in which only the top players in this season's Grand Prix series can participate, and is one of the tournaments that influences the selection of the Japanese national team for the Beijing Olympics. Yuma Kagiyama (Oriental Bio, Hoshigaki) and Shoma Uno (Toyota Motor), Kaori Sakamoto (Sysmex) for girls, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara (Kinoshita Group) were scheduled to participate in the Japanese team.
As for overseas players, Nathan Chen (USA), who has won the world championship for the third time in a row, and Camilla Varieva (Russia), who recorded the highest score in the world this season, have been decided to participate.
Regarding the GP final, a person in charge of the Japan Skating Federation said on November 30, when foreigners were banned, "at the stage of inquiring about whether overseas athletes can come to Japan," while waiting for the national decision, without giving up on the idea of preparing for the event. It was canceled for 2 consecutive years.

The Grand Prix Final, figure skating’s top pre-Olympic competition, has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event will not be held as scheduled in Osaka next week after Japan imposed travel restrictions this week, according to the Japanese figure skating federation. “Considering the complicated epidemic situation involving travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, safety concerns and logistical challenges, the organization of the event was extremely challenging,” according to an International Skating Union statement. “The Japan Skating Federation and the local organizing committee tried their best to find solutions but ultimately concluded that, regrettably, they are unable to organize and hold the event as planned.” It’s possible the event could be rescheduled at the end of the season, according to the ISU. The Grand Prix Final takes the top six per discipline from the autumn Grand Prix Series. Results of the Final are typically the best indicator of Olympic medal prospects. This year’s Grand Prix Final field included Olympic gold-medal favorites Nathan Chen, Kamila Valiyeva, pair Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov and ice dance couple Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron.

This and That: Team Tutberidze v. Omicron, 2021 Skate Canada Challenge & Korean Ranking Competition
This week, the JSF announced the cancellation of the ISU Grand Prix Final. While we are devastated and in our personal feelings, we take time to acknowledge the 40% of earnings lost by Eteri Tutberidze and what a postponement of the 2022 Olympics could mean for Team Tutberidze and the other top skaters. Then, we break down the latest proposals sent for the ISU Congress and discuss the gall of Norway seeking to raise the age minimum requirements for skating (and which camps are for it and against it). Meanwhile, the skating continues to go on elsewhere and we break down all of the figure skating news and performances by Yelim Kim, Young You, Haein Lee, Eunsoo Lim, Ahsun Yun, Stephen Gogolev and Deanna Stellato and Maxime Deschamps in the latest edition of 'This and That'.
