President Trump met with the queen of England today and committed several protocol gaffes that left many feeling that his behavior was an insult to Britain and lacked the respect that should be shown the monarch — and if not a monarch, a 92-year-old woman. The president was soundly condemned on social media for walking in front of Queen Elizabeth as they inspected a guard of honor of the Coldstream Guards. The queen was forced to bob and weave as she caught up to walk alongside him. Trump did appear to notice, and in the video below you’ll see that as she catches up with him, she gives the tiniest gesture with her hand, signaling to him to continue walking.

The Queen, 92, looked resplendent in her robes and white-plumed hat as she took part in the ceremony at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh. Both the Duke of Cambridge, 35, and the Princess Royal, 67, also wore their ceremonial robes as they attended the service. The Thistle Service takes place once every two years to install any new members of the Order of the Thistle. The royal dad wore a traditional dark green robe and black velvet hat with white ostrich feathers as he joined Queen Elizabeth for the annual Order of the Thistle service in Scotland.

The tragic death of Princess Diana 21 years ago this month brought questions about how close the royals were to the feelings of the people they serve. And the gossip-laden ending of the marriages of Prince Charles and Diana and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, coinciding with the fire at Windsor Castle (all in 1992), made it feel more soap opera than stately. But, after steadying the ship by agreeing to some modernizing changes, and, more significantly, permitting Diana’s sons Prince William and Prince Harryto marry Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, respectively (commoners whom they simply fell in love with), Queen Elizabeth has strengthened the institution she has led for 66 years. “She’s insuring the future of the monarchy by being open and flexible and adapting,” former palace staffer Colleen Harris says in this week’s issue of PEOPLE. “She’s allowing it to rebrand.”

The Queen, 92, was spotted heading to Crathie Kirk this morning in her chauffeur-driven Bentley, looking smart in a black coat teamed with a lime green hat. She looked in excellent spirits as she waved to onlookers as she was ferried to church. The monarch was accompanied on the journey by her only daughter Princess Anne, 68, who wore a cream coat with blue flecks and kept the chill at bay with a pale blue shawl wrapped around her shoulders. The Princess Royal teamed the ensemble with a white hat trimmed with a blue ribbon and a cream flower.

“There was this sense that he needed to join the firm and start working properly. “And the Queen had told him absolutely directly, ‘no, do what you need to do with your children, do what you need to do with your family and actually the real royal jobs will come in time.’ “I think that’s born out of what she didn’t have.” The Queen was reportedly hurt by Charles allowing his autobiographer Jonathan Dimbleby to reveal that he felt “emotionally estranged” from his parents. It appears she doesn’t want William’s children to say the same about him. She’s said to have a much closer relationship with her youngest children Andrew and Edward, who were born when she was much more established and confident in her role as monarch.
