The Los Angeles Angels fired manager Joe Maddon, the team announced Tuesday. Los Angeles named third base coach Phil Nevin as its interim manager and later on Tuesday, Angels GM Perry Minasian said Nevin would remain in that position for the rest of the season. The Angels are in the midst of a 12-game losing streak that dropped their record to 27-29, 8 1/2 games back of the Houston Astros in the AL West. Maddon had a 157-172 record in two-plus seasons managing the Angels. The Angels are sitting at 27-29 in their current skid, 8 1/2 games back of the Houston Astros in the American League West. Maddon, who won a World Series as manager of the Chicago Cubs in 2016, had a 157-172 record in two-plus seasons with Los Angeles.

Was Maddon on the hot seat entering this season? He didn’t have a contract extension in hand, so he was a lame-duck manager at the very least. It implies the team wanted to see if he could win before making a move to extend him. In that sense, he was on the hot seat, but it really burned up over the last couple of weeks.
How did the Angels lose 12 straight games with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani? It’s a really good question. The answer is those two players having an awful stretch and the bullpen being unable to close games, the starters being unable to last more than a few innings, and the defense somehow getting worse. Everyone just decided to be the worst version of themselves over the last two weeks. It’s pretty inexplicable for a team to go from 10 games over to 2 games under just like that.
What could Maddon have done differently? It’s tough. This is not all on Maddon, obviously. When players play badly, managers look worse. That being said, Maddon’s bullpen management could be questioned. He also has a very easy-going and calm demeanor that might help keep teams relaxed but also might not be what’s called for when things are going as poorly as they were. Sometimes a change is needed for the sake of it. That’s partly why I think this move happened.
What will the Angels’ long-term managerial search look like? Too early to answer that one. That will be a question for Minasian later today, surely. I will say that I don’t think Montgomery was made the bench coach by accident. To move directly from that front office into that role would be indicative of him likely wanting to, at some point, be a manager. I bet he would be a candidate, among others. Perhaps the best fit to work with someone like Minasian would be a younger, more analytically manager where the two can work together easily.
