Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” has remained the major force at the the holiday box office, hitting $420 million worldwide following Thursday screenings. The eighth Star Wars movie grossed $16.7 million domestically at 4,157 locations on Thursday, giving it $221.9 million in its first week. It should become the ninth highest domestic grosser of 2016 on Friday, surpassing the $227 million taken in by “Doctor Strange.” “Rogue One” easily outdistanced Illumination-Universal’s animated comedy “Sing,” which came in with $9.6 million at 4,022 sites on its second day on Thursday to lift its two-day total to $20.6 million. That’s still a strong launch and portends a debut of at least $70 million during the six-day holiday period through Dec. 26. “Rogue One” took in another $15 million internationally on Thursday to reach $197.9 million, led by the U.K. with $35.1 million, Germany with $18.1 million, France with $16.5 million, Australia with $16.1 million and Japan with $11.6 million.

BGR reports that, as Star Wars: Episode 8 picks up on Ahch-To with the first meeting between Luke Skywalker and Rey, things don’t go as simply as Rey (or Star Wars fans) might expect. Resembling Luke’s first meeting with Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back, Rey will find that Ahch-To will present its own challenges to the Daisy Ridley character, forcing her to prove her mettle, before she can even complete her mission. In that vein, Episode VIII will introduce a new species of alien. Remember the Ewoks? Well, instead of introducing a mammal-based creature, the next Star Wars installment will present a mass of creatures based on the puffin, pelagic seabirds, crossed with the 80’s Furby toy, for a cute yet fierce society of creatures who do not suffer visitors to Ahch-To lightly. The creatures, unnamed as of yet, are only 15 inches tall, but determined to protect their island from outsiders. Luke was forced to prove himself to these creature, upon first arriving on Ahch-To, just as Rey will be forced to do in Episode VIII.

Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars Episode VIII” is the most anticipated 2017 movie, according to a fan survey conducted by Fandango. The film will open on Dec. 15, almost a year after the studio’s spinoff, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which has topped $615 million worldwide in its first two weeks of release. Disney has the top three titles in the survey, conducted during the week of Dec. 19, with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” in second, followed by its live-action “Beauty and the Beast,” starring Emma Watson. “The new year promises a lot of excitement at the multiplex with a much-heralded return of beloved characters and stories highlighting the year’s top three most anticipated movies, ‘Episode VIII,’ ‘Guardians 2,’ and the live-action ‘Beauty and the Beast,’” says Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy teased in an interview that Star Wars fans can expect to find out some information about episode 8 in Spring 2017. Kennedy said that they are just giving Rogue One a little bit of time, Movie Pilot reported. While Episode 8 has already fired up the production a long time ago. The episode 9 is set to start the production in April 2017. This is really a bit early as what was expected by Star Wars fans, according to Slash Film. The "Star Wars: Episode VIII" motion picture kicked off the production last February 2016, and will be getting a Dec. 2017 release date. Nevertheless, there is going to be a major change for the upcoming films as this will put the episode 9 film into a May 2019 release.

Around this time last year, fans were still reeling from seeing a new Star Wars movie for the first time in a decade. Star Wars: The Force Awakens offered our first look at Mark Hamill's iconic Luke Skywalker in 32 years, since Return of the Jedi hit theaters. The latest sequel's final moments featured new hero Rey (Daisy Ridley) journeying to the hidden planet of Ahch-To, where Luke Skywalker had been in exile for several years. Today we have new details about why Star Wars 8 picks up right from that exact moment, instead of jumping ahead in time. There is often a large gap in time between many Star Wars movies, which allows for other movies like Rogue One to be developed and fill in part of that gap in this galaxy far, far away. When production began in earnest on Star Wars 8, a brief video was released that teased an earlier shoot on Skellig Michael Island, which was done before principal photography, since they only had a limited time to shoot on the Irish island. That video showed bits and pieces from the Skellig Michael Island shoot, which confirmed that the story of Star Wars 8 picks up immediately where Star Wars: The Force Awakens left off. Director Rian Johnson spoke with USA Today for their 2017 movies preview, where he explains why he didn't want to jump forward in time with this story. The director added that a "large part of the movie" will address why Luke Skywalker spent all those years in exile on Ahch-To, and what he'll do next. There have long been rumors that the story will somewhat mirror the tale told in The Empire Strikes Back, with Rey beginning her Jedi training on Ahch-to with Luke Skywalker, much in the same way that Luke started his training with master Yoda (Frank Oz) in The Empire Strikes Back. There have also been rumors that Rey abandons her training to save her friends Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), who have reportedly been captured by Kylo Ren as a trap to lure Rey out of hiding. If these rumors are true, then Star Wars 8 could follow The Empire Strikes Back's plot points perhaps even more closely than The Force Awakens followed A New Hope.
