President Joe Biden formally announced that he would seek reelection in 2024, readying a historic campaign against a Republican field dominated by his predecessor while economic uncertainty clouds his case for a second term.
Biden, 80, implored voters to let him “finish this job” he began when he took office and put aside any worries about his age. He said there is still work to do to give Americans a “fair shot” and beat back “extremists” in the Republican Party who want to cut government spending and curb abortion rights.
“The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom,” Biden said in a video released Tuesday. “I know what I want the answer to be and I think you do too. This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for reelection.”
Already the oldest person ever elected US president, Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term and faces intense scrutiny about his fitness to serve another four years in the White House. His kick-off message shows he is betting that voters will reward him for his decades of experience and record, while looking past age concerns.
Biden had long said he intended to seek a second term, making the official announcement somewhat of a foregone conclusion. He hadn’t felt pressure to declare his candidacy earlier because he faced no serious opposition for the Democratic Party’s nomination, his advisers said, even though polls showed large numbers of Democrats prefer he not run again in part because of his age.

Former President Obama boosted President Biden’s reelection bid on Tuesday, saying “let’s get to work” to reelect Biden.
“Proud of all that @joebiden and his administration have accomplished these last few years. He’s delivered for the American people — and he’ll continue to do so once he’s re-elected. Let’s get to work!” Obama said, retweeting Biden’s video announcement and including a link to Biden’s campaign website.
Biden on Tuesday officially declared his candidacy for reelection after saying for months that he intended to run.
In his announcement video, he touted his accomplishments and highlighted the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol and protests after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America — and we still are,” Biden says in the video. “The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom, more rights or fewer.”
But Biden is mounting his bid at a time when voters have expressed misgivings about a potential Biden-Trump rematch.
Biden is running for reelection as the oldest sitting president in U.S. history, and some voters have expressed concerns about Biden’s ability to serve as president for four additional years.
Biden would be 86 years old at the end of his second term if he gets reelected.
A Reuters-Ipsos poll taken just before Biden’s announcement found that almost half of Democrats said they do not want him to run for reelection, and more than 60 percent of respondents said Biden is too old to serve.
An NBC News poll published Sunday found 70 percent of Americans and 51 percent of Democrats don’t think Biden should run for reelection in 2024. The same poll found 60 percent of Americans and roughly one-third of Republicans do not think Trump should run again.
But Biden currently appears to be facing only marginal opposition for the Democratic nomination, including from self-help author Marianne Williamson and environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Early polling has shown President Biden with massive leads over the two of them.

Former President Trump responded to President Biden launching his reelection campaign on Tuesday by calling him the “single worst president in American history.”
The former president said in a release from his campaign that Biden’s announcement will “backfire” and called on his supporters to donate to the Trump campaign to help defeat Biden.
“Joe Biden – the single worst president in American history – is officially running for re-election. Hopeless Joe’s special interest donors are spending MILLIONS of dollars today to launch Biden’s campaign and keep their corrupt puppet in the White House. …But with YOUR help, today will be the moment his presidency begins its END,” the release states.
Trump has repeatedly called Biden the worst president ever in the past.
Trump noted in the release that instances like the FBI conducting a search for classified and sensitive documents on his Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, Fla., in August and his arrest in Manhattan last month were followed by a major “surge” of donations for his campaign.
“It’s not the size of your contribution that matters, but the sheer number of patriots in our ranks who stepped up today to FIRE Biden and Save America,” Trump said.
