Kate McCann will lay birthday presents in her missing daughter’s bedroom to mark her becoming a teenager. The brave mum is making the heartfelt gesture as she told how in her mind’s eye she jumps from seeing her as she was when she disappeared to envisaging her as she would be now. Maddie’s milestone birthday – she would now be 13 – is the toughest day of the year for Kate and husband Gerry. It comes just nine days after the family prayed for her safe return during last week’s gathering to mark the ninth anniversary of her disappearance. On her birthday on Thursday, the family will light candles on Maddie’s special cake and leave gifts for her in her pink bedroom, which has remained unchanged since she vanished as a three-year-old from a Portuguese holiday apartment in May 2007. It has become a shrine to her and is full of photos, drawings, unopened Christmas stockings and birthday gifts.

Sharon Osbourne has been criticised by the parents of Madeleine McCann after describing them as “insane” for leaving their daughter alone on the night she went missing. The former X Factor judge made the comments on Friday when discussing parents leaving their children unsupervised on chat show The Talk. “I will tell you a very quick story. There was a husband and wife on holiday in Portugal. They left their baby in the room sleeping, sleeping while they went to dinner in the restaurant,” she said. “While they were in the resort their baby was taken. And it is like, ‘Oh but we can see everything that is going on’ and it is, like, insane.”

Katie Price has backed Sharon Osbourne over her views on missing Madeleine McCann's parents - insisting they shouldn't have left her alone the night she disappeared. The former glamour model aired her views on Loose Women, sparking a mixed reaction from viewers - with many applauding her for being so honest. Sharon caused controversy just a few days ago when she branded Kate and Gerry McCann "insane" for leaving their three-year-old daughter alone in their room while at a holiday resort in Portugal in 2007.

Goncalo Amaral overturned a court ruling ordering him to pay doctors Kate and Gerry McCann 500,000 Euro (£380,000) in libel damages over the claims in his best-selling book The Truth Of The Lie. The victory meant the former policeman – who led the hunt for the youngster for five months after she vanished in Portugal in 2007 – did not have to pay the McCanns any compensation and could re-publish his book. If they lose, the legal bill could wipe out the Find Madeleine Fund set up using public donations to help the search for their daughter. A friend of the couple said: "They are exasperated by this. The longer it goes on the more anguish it causes them.

He was reportedly on "nodding terms" with Robert Murat and also visited a Portugal pub branded the Plough and Paedophile because of allegations against its DJ. It follows revelations that Clement Freud invited the McCanns to dine with him at his Praia da Luz villa in the days after Maddie disappeared without a trace in 2007. Now with the disgraced MP – who died in 2009 – being unmasked as a child abuser, pressure is growing on police to reveal if he was ever part of their investigation. Freud reportedly encountered Mr Murat – who was cleared of involvement in the disappearance in 2009 – at the Pig’s Head, according to its landlord. At another pub, the Plough and Harrow, he could have met DJ – who went on the run amid allegations about grooming and child sex images.
