“The reason we can put together four skates (including two in the team event) is because of the adversity that we dance around. You can’t control the marks in this sport. We’ve had a lot of results where we haven’t been satisfied or we’ve been told that we should be receiving more.” As if the home movies weren’t enough of an emotional wallop, the Shibutanis’ choice of the Coldplay song “Paradise” came with added significance. As The Washington Post noted, a few years ago, the Shib sibs skated to Coldplay’s “Fix You,” as a metaphor for their career that, at the time, was in need of some repair. This year, on their way to the medals podium, “Paradise” seemed about right. And between the Shib sibs and Adam Rippon, who skated to Coldplay in the routine that turned him into America’s sweetheart, Coldplay is proving to be a surprising good-luck charm for America’s skaters. If Mirai Nagasu debuts a free skate to “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” on Thursday, you’ll know why.
