Whitney had set goals for the 2016 Level 8 Georgia State Gymnastics Meet. The goals were to score an all around score of 38 or better, to win the all around title, and to make the state team representing Georgia at the Region 8 Regional State Team Competition. Unfortunately, Whitney did not accomplish any of these goals. There were just little things here and there that did not go the way Whitney had planned. These are the little things that happen to every gymnast. Whitney learned a lot at this competition and will be able to use the experience to get better. Whitney did do great! She performed her first Yurchenko vault in competition which was not too bad. And beside small hiccups on beam and bars, Whitney was nearly perfect. Whitney’s floor routine was also great! As luck would have it though, when we downloaded all the video from the meet…the floor routine footage was missing…bummer. Be sure to check out Whitney as she gets ready and competes at the upcoming USA Gymnastics Region 8 Regional Competition.

Whitney and her family headed to Asheville, North Carolina for the USA Gymnastics Region 8 Level 8 Regional Championships. Everyone was a little nervous because Whitney had twisted her ankle (again!) the week before the competition and had been unable to do any tumbling or vaulting prior to the day before the competition. Her coaches were planning on her scratching on both vault and floor unless she could show them that she was able to perform the skills needed. She proved she could do it, and so she competed all 4 events. First came the dreaded vault. Whitney had been battling an ankle injury all season long and then just when it was getting better she twisted it again. So the vault is no fun for Whitney right now. In warm ups she tried over and over, but never landed her Yurchenko once. When it came time to compete, Whitney stuck her first vault! But she and her coach knew that she had touched the mat with her hands when she landed. This is a half point deduction, so the decision was to try a second vault. Whitney did not stick her second vault, but she did manage to stay on her feet and scored a 9.025.

Blakely was ready to compete at the Gymnastics Academy of Atlanta’s Mini Mardi Gras Invitational. Blakely competed as a Rec League Bronze Gymnast. It has almost been a year since Blakely broke her leg in a car accident. She is doing great and having a good time at gymnastics. She doesn’t take her gymnastics quite as serious as her big sister, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to win. At this meet, Blakely won second place on the vault and came in third for the all around. Blakely had not completely memorized her beam routine or her floor routine, but managed to knock them out with the help of her coach. We all had a fun time, and then it was off to everybody’s favorite Mexican restaurant for chips and salsa! We are very proud of you Blakers!

Whitney is working hard every day to get better at gymnastics. Here, Whitney practices on the balance beam, the floor, and the vault. Balance Beam The gymnast performs a choreographed routine of up to 90 seconds in length consisting of leaps, acrobatic skills, somersaults, turns and dance elements on a padded beam. The beam is 125 centimeters (4 ft 1 in) from the ground, 500 centimeters (16 ft 5 in) long, and 10 centimeters (3.9 in) wide. This stationary object can also be adjusted, it can be raised higher or lower. The event requires, in particular, balance, flexibility, poise and strength. Floor Exercise In the past, the floor exercise event was executed on the bare floor or mats such as wrestling mats. Today, the floor event occurs on a carpeted 12m × 12m square, usually consisting of hard foam over a layer of plywood, which is supported by springs or foam blocks generally called a "spring" floor. This provides a firm surface that provides extra bounce or spring when compressed, allowing gymnasts to achieve greater height and a softer landing after the composed skill. Gymnasts perform a choreographed routine up to 90 seconds in the floor exercise event; Depending on the level, they may choose their own, or, if known as a "compulsory gymnast," default music must be played. Levels three to six the music is the same for each levels along with the skills within the routine.
