Regarding the situation in Ukraine under Russian aggression, the Wall Street Journal reported on the 6th that aides have made several proposals to President-elect Trump to end the hostilities. In an interview with NBC on the 7th, Trump said, "I think I'll talk to Russian President Putin," and attention is focused on his response.
According to the report, all of the proposals recommend that Russia's occupied areas in Ukraine be maintained as they are and that efforts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) be halted. There is also a proposal that the U.S. government would continue to supply weapons to Ukraine in order to increase deterrence against future Russian attacks in return for the Ukrainian government promising not to join NATO for at least 20 years.
However, a source from the former Trump administration told the WSJ, "When it comes to security issues, Trump often makes his own decisions intuitively."
In an interview with NBC, Trump explained that he has "probably spoken to leaders of 70 countries (since the 6th)." He also said he had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but has not yet spoken with Putin.
Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Trump has repeatedly said he will "end the war" and has boasted that he will "resolve the issue before I take office." As Trump likes to make "deals," how he will respond is a focus of attention.
