Last week, pop prodigy Grace VanderWaal performed her single, “Escape My Mind,” on The Late Late Show With James Corden. While the 14-year-old singer has an America’s Got Talent title under her belt, as well as a devoted fanbase, her Late Late Show visit afforded her the opportunity to further introduce herself to the world with a clever parody of Oasis’ “Wonderwall” – chosen, VanderWaal said, because she’s often told that her last name sounds like the 1995 Britpop hit. In the parody, VanderWaal poked fun at her YouTube fame and America’s Got Talent run, with references to her yellow pants (“I can’t believe that anybody/ Would wear those banana pants”) and first prize earnings (“I can’t believe that anybody/ Would give a million to a child/ Then bought a treehouse”).

“I feel like each song is, like, really, really different than the other – ’cause I don’t think I really know my exact style yet or my sound yet,” she said. “I want my music to evolve to become more me. But I don’t know. I think I’m just gonna, like, keep writing and just see where it goes.” She’s already got a signature instrument. Inspired by a family friend, she taught herself to play the ukulele by watching videos online. Parents David and Tina VanderWaal have watched in awe as their daughter grew from the pig-tailed toddler who liked to sing to the artist she is today. “Everything was sort of led by her. I mean, even the story of how the ukulele came into play, she went and got the ukulele,” David said. “And three months later, she’s writing songs on her ukulele.”

"Riptide"- Vance Joy's acoustic-based tune is perfect for VanderWaal's ukulele, but almost even more perfectly for her soulful tone. America’s Got Talent” 2017 appears to be the season of child singers, based on the results so far. While we have seen a few comedy, dance and magic acts advance to the Season 12 live shows, the majority have been singers — specifically, child singers. Is the show stacking the deck to find the next Grace VanderWaal? After being crowned the champion of “America’s Got Talent’s” 11th season last year, 13-year-old VanderWaal has become one of the show’s most successful winners. (See the “AGT” winners list.) Her emotive voice combined with her small stature really charmed the judges and America, and we are now seeing numerous acts in Season 12 following in her footsteps. Three of the five Golden Buzzer acts in the audition rounds were child singers: 12-year-old singing ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer, 13-year-old Angelina Green, and 16-year-old Christian Guardino. This is in addition to 29-year-old deaf singer Mandy Harvey, who sings and plays the ukulele much like VanderWaal. In the Judge Cuts we saw even more Golden Buzzers being used on child singers, including 9-year-olds Angelica Hale and Celine Tam, plus 21-year-old singer-songwriter Chase Goehring.
