Christina Grimmie was a vivacious, outgoing singer whose career was born on social media and propelled toward the big time by television. She didn't consider herself a famous person, not like the judges on "The Voice," where she competed, but she had a following that was as enthusiastic about her music as she was. "The Voice" Season 6 contestant Christina Grimmie performs as part of "The Voice Tour" at Cobb Energy Centre, in Atlanta. Florida authorities say "The Voice" star Grimmie is in critical condition after being shot at a concert venue in Orlando by a suspect who then fatally shot himself after being tackled by the singer-songwriter's brother. Orlando Police Department officials tell WKMG-TV that Grimmie was shot Friday night at The Plaza Live, where she was scheduled to perform. "She was doing a meet-and-greet, just signing autographs and selling merchandise. This white male approached her and opened fire, striking her," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said Saturday at a news conference. "There is no indication that he knew her. We're looking into that to try to find a motive for the crime."

Slain singer Christina Grimmie was on the minds of some of the artists performing at CMA Music Festival in Nashville this weekend, including Cassadee Pope who, like Grimmie, rose to fame on NBC’s The Voice. Pope appeared at Nissan Stadium Saturday night (June 11) to perform her hit duet with Chris Young, “Think of You.” Speaking with media backstage beforehand, she said of Grimmie, “I’m performing on her behalf tonight.” “My heart goes out to her family and friends,” Pope said backstage at CMA Music Festival. “I met her a few times and, obviously, I’m a fan of what she did and her work, so it’s just a really sad day for everybody.”

The 22-year-old singer was best known for competing on season 6 of The Voice, and for being discovered by another young talent's parents. Grimmie started out as a YouTube star, covering popular radio songs. Selena Gomez's mother and stepfather discovered Grimmie on the internet in 2010, and by 2011 Grimmie was on tour with Selena and her band. During that time, Grimmie was often asked in interviews what it was like to be so close with Gomez, who was rising in popularity due to her role on Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place and her budding relationship with teen sensation Justin Bieber. (Gomez and Bieber each dedicated songs to Grimmie during their shows this week; neither could make it through their emotional performances without tearing up.) E! News recently unearthed one such interview from 2012, and it is heartbreaking to watch now. Grimmie is so unflinchingly kind and sweet when talking about her touring partner and friend, Gomez. "I've been doing a lot of work out in L.A. and back," she says in the video. "She is the most normal person — and I'm not just saying that because I know her, I'm just saying — I met her, and she was like getting food for me and my parents. I was like, sit down! We should be serving you."

The Voice family and other celebs are mourning the death of former show finalist Christina Grimmie, who was shot dead at age 22 Friday. The singer, who came in third place during season six in 2014, was gunned down by an unidentified assailant at an Orlando, Florida concert of a band she was touring with, Before You Exit. Her brother tackled the gunman as he opened fire and the suspect soon shot and killed himself. Grimmie later died of her wounds. The motive for the shooting was unclear and police are still investigating. "We are heartbroken," read a post on The Voice's Twitter page. "@therealgrimmie is a loved member of our family. Our thoughts are with her and her family. #PrayForChristina." On Friday night, singer and The Voice contestant Christina Grimmie was shot and killed at an Orlando, Florida concert at the age of 22. Amid the outpouring of support her family has received in the days since, her former The Voice coach Adam Levine has offered to pay for both the funeral and Grimmie’s mother’s flight to the event, according to the late singer’s brother. Marcus Grimmie took to Facebook late Sunday night to share the touching news. “I found out this morning that Adam Levine personally called my mother and said he will pay for the funeral and her plane flight, and I was blown away,” Grimmie’s brother wrote. “Words cannot express… literally I have no words.” Levine, who led Grimmie to a third place finish on season 6 of the NBC competition, was “absolutely devastated and heartbroken” by the young singer’s death. “Christina was a natural, a gifted talent that comes along so rarely. She was taken from us too soon,” he wrote on Twitter and Facebook Saturday. “This is yet another senseless act of extreme violence. I am left stunned and confused how these things can conceivably continue to happen in our world.”

Two video tributes have been released honoring two aspects of the life of former “Voice” contestant Christina Grimmie of Evesham, two weeks after she was gunned down after a concert in Orlando. Many former contestants from the NBC reality show share memories of the 22-year-old in a video released by the show’s producers. Jake Barker called Grimmie his “little sister” who bought video games and a skateboard while on tour while Kat Perkins remembered them dying their hair blonde when their coach Adam Levine had done the same thing. Audra McLaughlin said Grimmie was “goofy and funny,” while Colts Neck’s Jacquie Lee, the runner up from season 5, said she has many memories with Grimmie: “I miss them all.”
