Mao Shimada (15, Kinoshita Academy), last season's world junior champion who won the women's figure skating short program with a score of 71.05, appeared in the free skate on the 30th. She also scored the top overall score of 125.94 points in the free program, and won with a total of 196.99 points. This was her fourth Youth Olympics, and she became the first Japanese women's singles player to win a gold medal.
Although she landed the opening triple axel (three and a half turns), she was judged as under-rotated and lost points, and then fell on the quadruple toe loop, so she was not able to perform as well as she had hoped in the first half. Even so, in the second half, when her base points were 1.1 times higher, she racked up points with triple loops, triple Lutzes, and single triple jumps, and was able to connect her performance without making any major mistakes.
Among other Japanese athletes, Uta Takagi (16, Tokyo Joshi Gakuin), who placed second in the short program, placed fifth in the free program with 115.97 points. Won the bronze medal with a total of 183.20 points. Both participants from Japan were on the podium.
