â– Figure Skating World Championships (23rd Japan time, Montreal, Canada)
The women's free skate was held, and Kaori Sakamoto (23, Sysmex) scored 149.67 points in the free program, totaling 222.96 points, coming from 4th place in the short program to achieve her third consecutive World Championship title.
She became the eighth woman to achieve this feat in 56 years and the first time in the tournament's history since Peggy Fleming (USA) from 1966 to 1968, and the first Japanese woman or woman to accomplish this feat.
Sakamoto performed in third place in the final group. At the beginning, he landed a stable double axel (two and a half revolutions), then landed a triple Lutz and Salchow with plenty of time to spare. Sakamoto accumulated additional points for GOE (points of performance), and in the second half, she landed a combination from a triple flip and succeeded with two consecutive jumps. In the final stage, she landed the final three-turn loop to a passionate tune, and the audience cheered as he landed all his jumps.
After the performance, Sakamoto was overcome with emotion and looked up at the sky, while Coach Nakano stood at the rink and did a fist pump with both hands. The fans at the venue gave Sakamoto a standing ovation as he skated through the race with almost no mistakes.
