The first Pokemon game for smartphones is already a global sensation less than a week since it launched. There’s a new Big Thing going on right now. You’ve probably seen people talking about it obsessively on social media, and depending on where you live you may have seen people playing it in real life. “Pokemon GO” is a free “augmented reality” game for iOS and Android smart devices in which players must physically move around the real world in order to capture Pokemon (short for pocket monsters), which are fantastical creatures from the ever-popular video game/collectible card game/anime franchise of the same name.

Capturing and collecting Pokemon in GO isn’t exactly identical to the classic games, and while this is not a complicated app (yet!) there are still tons of features that aren’t easy to grasp for even the oldest Poke-fans. We’ve been fumbling around, trying to wrap our brains around this ambitious step into the iOS / Android market, and hopefully our suffering will help you understand all that Pokemon GO has to offer. How to Capture Pokemon To move your avatar, you’ll have to move too — in the real world! The GPS map will show your movement, and the app will vibrate to notify you if there are nearby wild Pokemon. When you see a wild Pokemon, you’ll get a chance to catch it. Catching Evolved Pokemon – Is It Possible? Catching Pokemon that have already evolved is difficult, but not impossible. Regular Pokeballs have an extremely low chance of capture — watch for the colored circle. Using basic Pokeballs on Evolved Pokemon produces a Yellow Circle. Pokestops – How They Work Pokestops are special places where you can earn a nice item reward. Just spin the picture and tap the item to get your prize. Look for little blue diamonds on your map — some lucky people have a Pokestop right in their home! These locations are randomly generated, but it seems the goal is for reward locations to appear in public places. Gym Battles, Teams, and Gym Leaders You won’t battle Pokemon in the wild, but you can face other trainers in Gym Battles. Gyms are special nodes that can be claimed by one of the three teams; red, blue, or yellow. They look like tall towers with multiple spinning circles on your GPS map. Tapping them allows you to initiate a Gym Battle.

Not only does the game encourage users to get outside and visit hotspots and landmarks using the GPS and camera on their phone, it also allows users to catch eggs which can only be hatched once the person has walked between 0.2km and 0.5km. So where's the proof? Cardiogram – the fitness tracker that measures heart rate in the Apple watch – said they've seen a spike in exercise similar to that seen following New Year's resolutions. Writing on a blog via their website, they explained: "During the 30 days prior to Pokémon GO’s release, anywhere from 37–46% of users got the recommended level of exercise. "The day of launch (July 6) seemed like any other: about 45%. Two days later, that number climbed to 50%; today, so far, it’s at 53%. That’s a noticeable uptick!"

Determined not to be left out of the augmented reality craze which has swept the US and Europe, resourceful gamers in major African cities have found ways to download the game. "Pokemon Go" was among the top google searches in Kenya in July, Kenyan media reported. The Facebook group "Pokemon Go South Africa" has nearly 10,000 members – a figure which has almost doubled since last week. Meanwhile players, or "trainers," in other African hubs like Lagos and Accra are also spotting Pokemon, short for pocket monsters, in their cities. Despite dangerous streets and dodgy internet connections, players in Nigeria, Africa's largest mobile market, are quickly becoming unstoppable. Even Lagos' notorious traffic jams, which often keep people stranded on the roads for hours, are an opportunity for Pokemon fans, who use the long hours spent in traffic jams to search for rare finds.
