First lady Melania Trump wished followers on Twitter a Merry Christmas on Monday, posting a selfie with a holiday-themed filter complete with reindeer and a hat. The first couple spent Christmas Eve taking calls for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) call center and answering questions about 's whereabouts. They later attended a church service at Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea. Trump has played a major role in the Trump White House's first Christmas, unveiling the official decorations late last month.

Fifty-six years ago, in her husband’s first term as president, Jacqueline Kennedy introduced the tradition of giving the White House Christmas trees a theme. She chose “The Nutcracker” for 1961 and decked a tree in the Blue Room with ornaments modeled after the Tchaikovsky ballet. This week, as first lady Melania Trump unveiled the Christmas décor for 2017 – along with the theme “time-honored traditions” – there was a hat-tip (intentional or un) to that first year, as the theme given to the Christmas trees in the Grand Foyer and Cross Hall was “The Nutcracker.” As the White House holiday season begins, POLITICO takes a look back at the first Christmases of first families from the Kennedys to the present.

Unlike her husband, more Americans have a favorable opinion of the First Lady than an unfavorable one First Lady Melania Trump has become the most popular Trump in the latest Economist/YouGov Poll. She is more popular than her husband, and more popular than First Daughter Ivanka. Michelle Obama was also more popular than her husband in early 2010. That is typical of First Ladies, who frequently are liked more than their political husbands, even when many Americans evaluate them politically. However, Mrs. Trump is a little less popular than Mrs. Obama was one year into her husband’s presidency. [Mr. Trump is also less popular than Barack Obama was one year into his presidency.]
