Perhaps the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) has figured out how the DNA of the alleged NSU terrorist Uwe Böhnhardt was transferred to a piece of fabric that immediately beside the body of the missing 2001 Peggy Knobloch that had been found. The BKA officials compared the crime scene photos of the dead Böhnhardt and the salvage of the skeletal parts of Peggy. In the photos the same striking scale of the trace was visible. The measuring instrument is almost unmistakable and of a condition, which "only once exists," said it in investigator circles. Apparently, it is now conceivable for the investigators that a body cell of the dead Böhnhardt with this scale was transferred to the locality of Peggy. In the recovery of the girls at the same time in July in a forest on the border between Bavaria and Thuringia, the crime scene group of the police was deployed as in the rescue of the dead Böhnhardt in November 2011 in a mobile home in Eisenach. The spokesman of the police department of Oberfranken, which deals with the Peggy case, did not want to comment on the new findings at first, but told SPIEGEL that new investigations were necessary since today. It was pointed out from the outset that it had to be clarified how the DNA was transferred, according to Jürgen Stadter. On Thursday afternoon, the police department and the public prosecutor's office reported that the "tracking device" would be investigated for possible contamination. This is to be carried out by a body which was not concerned with the investigations so far. In addition, witnesses were questioned, "in order to verify the exact path of the track, its safeguarding and processing in Thuringia and Bavaria". Further information could currently not be disclosed for reasons of the investigation.

Two of the greatest crime dramas in German history converged in spectacular fashion recently when the DNA of neo-Nazi mass-murderer Uwe Boenhardt was found on the corpse of the country's most famous missing girl. Forensic tests on genetic material at the gravesite of nine-year-old Peggy Knobloch - often referred to as the Maddie McCann of Germany - has been confirmed as coming from National Socialist Underground gangster Boehnhardt. Boehnhardt and his sidekick Uwe Mundlos committed suicide in 2011 when they botched a bank raid aimed at financing their underground cell which was dedicated to driving immigrants out of Germany. Both of the dead men were lovers of Zschaepe - referred to in German media as "The Nazi Bride" - and pornography, as well as lurid Nazi propaganda, were found on the computers the trio left behind. Now those computers are being re-examined to try to find out if there are any more clues that might pinpoint Boehnhardt as the killer of Peggy. Numerous childrens' toys, including a teddy bear, were found in the wreckage of their caravan hideout which Zschaepe torched after her cohorts killed themselves. Police and prosecutors said that genetic material recovered from the site had been connected to Boehnhardt. It is understood to be a fragment of cloth smaller than a human thumbnail.

The death of a girl considered to be the ‘German Madeleine McCann’ may have finally been solved after the discovery of crucial DNA, reports say. Peggy Knobloch’s body was discovered in July some 15 years after she went missing 50 yards from the front door of her home in Lichtenberg, Germany. German prosecutors now believe they may have found the DNA of alleged neo-Nazi mass murderer Uwe BonHardt on her body, Bild reported. While authorities are still clarifying whether the DNA trace – on a piece of blanket – comes from contamination it could represent a major breakthrough in the case. BonHardt is thought to have committed suicide in 2011 after a bank raid, which was intended to fund his National Socialist Underground (NSU) cell, failed. The NSU was dedicated to driving immigrants out of Germany and now its only alleged surviving member, Beate Zschäpe, has told judges she wants to testify over the girl’s brutal death.
