After the Indians shockingly rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to tie it, Ben Zobrist hit the tiebreaking RBI double the opposite way down the left-field line in the top of the 10th and Miguel Montero followed with a difference-making RBI single, leading the Cubs to an 8-7 victory in 10 innings in Game 7 of the World Series at Progressive Field on Wednesday night. The heroics followed the unexpected meltdown of closer Aroldis Chapman two innings earlier and were followed Mike Montgomery coming on with two outs in the 10th to get his first career save and bring the Cubs their first championship since 1908. Zobrist’s go-ahead double was set up by a lead-off single from Kyle Schwarber following a short rain delay. Albert Almora then pinch ran, advancing to second on Kris Bryant’s deep flyout to the warning track. After Anthony Rizzo was intentionally walked, Zobrist delivered. Montero followed with an RBI single. After that followed a wild bottom of the eighth, when Chapman was summoned to get the final out with a 6-3 lead but instead gave up an RBI double to Brandon Guyer and a game-tying two-run homer to the usually powerless Rajai Davis. The unexpected blast from Davis was the latest game-tying homer in a decisive game in World Series history.
