President-elect Trump is expected to name Elaine Chao, former Labor Secretary under George W. Bush from 2001-2009, to become Secretary of Transportation, according to a New York Times report. Considering that infrastructure is one of Trump’s pet projects, Chao’s post will be instrumental in the administration. As Transportation Secretary, Chao—who is married to Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and whose family earned its wealth in the shipping industry—will oversee eleven agencies that manage air, ground, rail, and maritime travel. In the past, Chao has served as a White House Fellow and Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission under the Reagan administration, and Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation under Bush Sr., giving her a CV as long as the D.C. swamp is thick. Chao was president of the Peace Corps from 1991-1992, and President and CEO of United Way of America from 1996-2001, before returning to the federal government to become George W. Bush's Labor Secretary. During her tenure under Bush Jr., Chao was criticized for favoring business and being lax on worker safety.

U.S-China relations may take a turn for the worse after President-elect Donald Trump publicly insulted the mainland twice in a span of 72 hours.
The first incident took place on Friday, when the real-estate billionaire accepted a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, a move that broke nearly four decades of U.S foreign policy. The 10-minute call with a Taiwanese leader was the first by a U.S. head of state since 1979, when Washington first embraced the "One China" policy under which Beijing views special territories Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as part of China.
Following the call, Trump tweeted: "The President of Taiwan CALLED ME today to wish me congratulations on winning the Presidency. Thank you!"

In what may be the most unlikely meeting of the presidential transition process so far, former vice president, former Democratic presidential nominee, former Senator and Nobel Peace prize winner Al Gore, met with President-elect Donald Trump on Monday. Gore has spent decades warning about the dire consequences of unchecked, man-made climate change while Trump regularly called climate change "a hoax" during the campaign. Initially, the session was not even expected to include the president-elect at all. According to the transition spokesman, it scheduled as a sit down between Gore and Trump's daughter, Ivanka, who is also serving as a member of the official transition team. The 35 year-old Ms. Trump is also an executive with the Trump Organization and Trump has described her as one of his most trusted advisers. Politico reported earlier this week that Ivanka, who's expected to play some of the social roles typically occupied by the First Lady, is interested in making climate change one of her signature issues.

Donald Trump prepared to fill Cabinet slots Monday while expanding his search for a secretary of State and lobbing barbs at China. Preparing for a new round of job interviews for secretary of State and other posts, Trump formally confirmed weeks-long plans to nominate former Republican rival Ben Carson to be secretary of Housing and Urban Development. "We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities," Trump said in making the formal announcement about the retired neurosurgeon. "Ben shares my optimism about the future of our country and is part of ensuring that this is a Presidency representing all Americans."

President-elect Donald Trump is retaining his executive producer credit — and financial ties — with the NBC reality show “Celebrity Apprentice” as he transitions to his new role in Washington. NBC is preparing to launch “The New Celebrity Apprentice” on Jan. 2 with former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger stepping in as the show’s boardroom judge. He replaces Trump as the lead character who decides the fates of various contestants. Trump’s ongoing financial arrangement with “Celebrity Apprentice” was confirmed late Thursday by a person close to the show who was not authorized to discuss the matter. The Times reported on Trump’s planned ongoing relationship with “Celebrity Apprentice” last week.
