Let’s talk about the “bra strap” dress that Ivanka Trump wore to her father’s first address to a joint session of Congress last night, a pink, one-shouldered number reportedly by French designer Roland Mouret. Its boudoir-ish black strap was meant to look like a bra strap, of course, and it heightened the sex appeal of Ivanka’s bare-shoulder look, which was perhaps better suited for date night than a speech in Congress. It was an unconventional choice for such a serious occasion, which made it all the more un-Ivanka. Since moving to Washington, she’s glammed it up for black-tie affairs like the Governors Ball and the Alfalfa Dinner, but has otherwise dressed on the conservative side, particularly for meetings and appearances alongside her father. This is in keeping with the old Ivanka—the #WomenWhoWork entrepreneur whose own fashion line bills itself as “appropriately sexy.”

Tuesday morning, Ivanka Trump put on a navy turtleneck and heels that appeared to be from her own besieged fashion-line collection, and accompanied her father to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. "Ivanka is here right now -- Hi, Ivanka," President Donald Trump said from a podium, gesturing toward his daughter, who stood on the masking-tape mark laid out for her. She clasped her hands in front of her, smiling and nodding at appropriate intervals. Meanwhile, on Twitter, she was being blasted. The night before, in response to bomb threats at Jewish community centers nationwide, Ivanka had tweeted out a call for tolerance. Her detractors found great irony in that. "Your father [peddled] hate in the campaign and gave a voice to all these white nationalists to come out," one wrote. "Why r u in all [Donald Trump's] mtgs?" wrote another. "We, the People, did not elect you to play any role in WH!"

Ivanka Trump’s eponymous women’s fashion line is reporting record sales figures despite calls for a boycott and controversies surrounding President Trump. “Since the beginning of February, they were some of the best performing weeks in the history of the brand,” Abigail Klem, the president of the Ivanka Trump fashion brand, tells Refinery29 in an interview published Tuesday. “For several different retailers Ivanka Trump was a top performer online, and in some of the categories it was the [brand’s] best performance ever.” The news of a sales surge comes after Nordstrom announced in early February that it would no longer carry the 35-year-old’s clothing and accessories, citing poor product sales. The move caused President Trump to tweet shortly after the announcement that his daughter was being “treated so unfairly” by the luxury department store giant.

Ivanka Trump faces an uphill battle as she tries to build support for her signature issues of affordable child care and paid family leave, courting corporate executives and lawmakers in hopes of generating momentum amid a packed legislative agenda in Washington. Trump appears to be making headway with one important player, however: her father. In President Donald Trump's speech laying out his vision for America to Congress last week, he highlighted both issues as having bipartisan appeal, along with defense and infrastructure spending. "My administration wants to work with members of both parties to make child care accessible and affordable, to help ensure new parents that they have paid family leave," Trump said to applause. But the prospect of near-term action remains slim. The White House has set an aggressive timeline for making good on its core campaign promises: It hopes to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act by Easter and then tackle a massive overhaul of the nation's tax code by August. There are also routine tasks such as drafting the federal budget and raising the debt ceiling that have turned into flashpoints in the past.

Ivanka Trump has been assigned many unofficial roles while walking the halls of the West Wing. She has been called the de facto first lady and a calming influence against the more bombastic traits of her father. Officials in the White House hail her as the potential force behind policies to address women in the workplace. Ivanka is no stranger to the spotlight, having evolved over the years from teenage model to Manhattan socialite and entrepreneur. But as she navigates the transition to holding a seat at the most powerful table in America, the elder daughter of Donald Trump is cultivating a reputation as a potential moral compass, creating at least the perception that she might be able to rein in some of the more extreme policies of the administration. The question, observers say, is whether Ivanka can forge a path that ultimately proves impactful in shaping policy – or if she is relegated to window dressing her father’s hardline approach with a softer veneer. “She’s the only person that I believe Donald Trump consistently listens to,” said Liz Mair, a Republican strategist. “I don’t think that there’s anybody in the world who substitutes for his daughter and her husband as a sort of proxy.”
