 The ladies’ podium is probably the easiest to predict. It’s only a question of whether a Russian sweep will happen or not. Three out of four members of the podium are European medalists, while the last is looking to add a medal to her growing collection. Outside of the top 4, we like to think it’s still anyone’s ball game—er… skate.  GOLD: Evgenia Medvedeva (RUS) “How does one stop Evgenia Medvedeva?” is a question we have yet to figure out the answer to. She has yet to lose a competition all season long, despite some not-exactly-close calls at Trophee de France and Russian Nationals. With strong technical content and the reputation to back her up, the only way she’ll lose the competition is to skate on her butt the whole time.  SILVER: Anna Pogorilaya (RUS) Until Russian Nationals, this season has been Anna Pogorilaya’s best showing yet. However, skating with an injured knee at Russian nationals almost cost her that spot in both the European and World teams. Barring any more injury, this is where we will see whether she peaked too early this season, or has finally figured out how to be consistent. Should all go well, that silver medal should be hers. BRONZE: Maria Sotsokova (RUS) Maria Sotsokova’s been on a roll this season, and she seems like she has no intention of stopping. This competition can be make or break for her as the second half of the season begins. If she does well here, she could very well be in the discussion for Worlds podium contenders.  Russian figure skater Yevgenia Medvedeva on "TV Game" commented on the short program of the European Championship.  - I wanted to beat my record, set on the Grand Prix finals. It did not happen, but I'm happy with high marks. There are always moments that are not drawn to the maximum, there is room to grow. This language I expressed in training? To itself, it is not necessary to relax ahead of time. Sometimes mistakes are only in favor. If you made it through negligence, for uncollected mind, you're more in control of myself then.  Pogorilaya’s program to “Scent of a woman” featured a triple Lutz-triple toeloop, a triple loop, double Axel as well as strong spins footwork. The reigning World bronze medalist set a new personal best for herself with 74.39 points. “It was the best program of this season, but it does not mean that it was perfect. I made some small mistakes and have to work on them. All the small details in the program are important – gestures, emotions, artistry, so there is lots of room for improvement”, the two-time European bronze medalist commented.  Kostner produced a triple toe-triple toe combination, triple loop, double Axel in her routine to “God of Thunder” and “Bonzo’s Montreux”. The five-time European Champion earned a level four for her flying camel spin and the step sequence to set a season’s best of 72.40 points. “There are things that I did really well and others things I could have done better. I am especially happy about dealing with nervousness, in between being happy to be here and containing the emotions. This gives me confidence to continue on this journey”, said the 2014 Olympic bronze medalist who had not competed the past two seasons.  Maria Sotskova (RUS) placed fourth with a strong performance that included a triple Lutz-triple toe combination at 72.17 points. Laurine Lecavelier (FRA) in fifth (63.81 points) and Ivett Toth (HUN) in sixth place (61.49 points) turned in clean performances as well. 34 Ladies competed in the Short Program and the top 24 qualified for the Free Skating on Friday.  Figure skater Yevgenia Medvedeva from the Russian team became the winner of the European Championship, which takes place on the ice palace of sports in Czech Ostrava. She won the Euro 2017 with two world records - in the free skating and the sum of the two programs.  Recall that today Medvedeva belong to all the top titles in figure skating among women, except for the title of Olympic champion. She is the winner of the Grand Prix 2016 and the current world champion and Europe. And Eugene took a second continental title. Medvedeva won the free program for 150.79 points, which is the highest result in the world, according to RIA Novosti. The sum of scores from the two exercises will also become a new planetary achievement - 229.71 points.  The second place was won by another of the Russian national team Anna Pogorilaya, scored a total of 211.39 points. The bronze medalist was Italian Carolina Kostner, received 210.52 points. |

 Czech Republic: Reigning world champion Javier Fernandez won his fifth successive European figure skating title on Saturday, equalling a 44-year-old record. Fernandez scored 294.84 points to see off Russian duo Maxim Kovtun (266.80) and Mikhail Kolyada (250.18). The 25-year-old equalled the record of five in a row set by Czech skater Ondrej Nepela between 1969 and 1973. Despite falling during his free programme, performed to an Elvis Presley soundtrack, the Madrid skater had plenty to spare having built up a 10-point lead after his short programme on Friday.  "To win five times in a row, to go down in the history of figure skating, it's incredible," said Fernandez. "Sometimes, even I can't believe it." For 21-year-old Kovtun, it was a second silver medal after finishing runner-up in 2015 before taking a bronze last year. |
