Figure skater Choi Da-bin won the women's short program at the Asian Winter Games here Thursday. Choi scored 61.30 points to lead the pack of 24 skaters at Makomanai Indoor Skating Rink. Rika Hongo of Japan was in second place with 60.98 points, followed by Zhao Ziquan of China at 58.90 points. The free skate is set for Saturday. Choi was a last-minute injury replacement for Park So-youn, who withdrew with an ankle injury. The 17-year-old is fresh off a fifth-place finish at the International Skating Union (ISU) Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in South Korea last week, with the personal best scores in each of short program (61.62), free skate (116.92) and total points (182.41).

China’s Jin Boyang leads the Asian Winter Games men’s figure skating competition after the short program on Friday, with Shoma Uno a close second. Jin scored 92.86 points with Uno later taking to the Makomanai Ice Arena to record a 92.43-point skate despite making a number of mistakes on his jumps. China’s Yan Han is third 1.30 points behind his competition-leading countryman and Takahito Mura is fourth on 90.32. Jin did not execute his opening quadruple lutz-triple toeloop combination to perfection, but followed it up with solid skating and nailed both his triple axel and quad toeloop. “Jumps define me and I like them. Many skaters are taking quads on now and I’d like to challenge them, too,” Jin said. “I think I could display everything I’ve been hoping for, so it was a satisfactory performance. Uno, meanwhile, started with a decent quad flip, but failed his combination involving a quad toeloop, and was content only with his triple axel. “Nothing was holding me back, but the jumps I was failing in training came out as they were (in competition),” Uno said. “I didn’t have a good axis on my jumps at training today, which makes a slight difference. I have to up my success percentage for the axels, at least. “Not putting in the performance that I’m capable of is the most disappointing thing. I couldn’t jump well apart from my axel.”

South Korea’s Choi Da-bin was crowned ladies ice skating gold medallist here today, while China’s Yu Xiaoyu and Zhang Hao secure the Asian Winter Games pairs crown. Choi had led the ladies standings after a fine performance in the short programme two nights ago, which ensure the 17-year-old would be last to take to the ice today. When the time came, the South Korean showed she was more than capable of dealing with pressure by producing a personal best free skate performance, receiving a score of 126.24 points. Combined with her short programme mark, Choi finished on a total of 187.54 to secure a comfortable margin of victory. Her achievement would also come on the seventh anniversary of her compatriot Yuna Kim earning South Korea’s maiden ladies figure skating gold at Olympics, back in Vancouver 2010.

Shoma Uno of Japan overcame several early mistakes Sunday to win the gold medal in men's figure skating on the final day of the Asian Winter Games. Uno, who was second after the short program, fell on his opening quad loop of his free skate and stepped out of a triple lutz, but scored 281.27points. Two Chinese skaters finished second and third — Boyang Jin with 280.08 points and Yan Han with 271.86. Despite the early mistakes, Uno earned points with three combination jumps including his last one: a triple salchow-single loop-triple flip.
