Emmanuel Macron – who was Trump’s guest in Washington this week in the first state visit of the administration – decided to be proactive, gripping the US president’s palm with white-knuckle ferocity and leaving his left arm free for pats and hugs. The French president can point to some benefits of his approach. Trump reserves most of his admiration for autocrats like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Mohammed bin Salman. Macron is the only democratically elected head of state Trump seems to genuinely admire, having convinced the touchy US president that he genuinely likes him – and that he, too, is a man of power.

French President Emmanuel Macron addresses the nation amid violent riots in Paris spurred by activist group Gilets Jaunes, or 'Yellow Vests'. Backlash against Macron's proposed eco-tax initially sparked the violence, after which he killed the legislation, though protesters have since called for his resignation. Mr Macron's leadership is hanging by a thread after the Yellow Vest protests posed the most formidable challenge yet to his presidency. Leftist MEPs said Thursday's vote is the result of 18 months of fiscal injustice and called on the French president to "radically change direction". The Paris protests which erupted on November 17, were focused on denouncing a squeeze on household spending brought about by Mr Macron's taxes on diesel, which he said were necessary to combat climate change and protect the environment.

Gabriel Attal has been named France's next prime minister, as Emmanuel Macron aims to revive his presidency with a new government. At 34, he is the youngest PM in modern French history, outranking even Socialist Laurent Fabius who was 37 when he was appointed by François Mitterrand in 1984. Mr Attal replaces Élisabeth Borne, who resigned after 20 months in office. Throughout that time she struggled with a lack of a majority in parliament. Gabriel Attal, who is currently education minister, certainly makes an eye-catching appointment. He will now have the task of leading the French government into important European Parliament elections in June. His rise has been rapid. Ten years ago he was an obscure adviser in the health ministry, and a card-carrying member of the Socialists. He will also be the first openly gay occupant of Hôtel Matignon. He has a civil partnership with another Macron whizz-kid, the MEP Stéphane Sejourné. Welcoming him to his new role, President Macron wrote on social media: "I know I can count on your energy and your commitment to implement the project of revitalisation and regeneration that I announced."

PARIS (Reuters) - A day after former President Donald Trump won the first round of the U.S. Republican presidential nomination race, French President Emmanuel Macron told a news conference that he would accept the elected leader.
Trump won the Iowa caucuses on the 15th by the largest margin ever. Despite having a total of four criminal trials, he is clearly poised to win the nomination.
Macron and Trump had a tumultuous relationship during the four years they were in power. Mr. Macron initially called Mr. Trump a "friend," but friction between the two has since become apparent as differences in opinion have emerged over issues such as climate change, taxation, and policy on Iran.
