Mirai Nagasu isn’t letting the haters bring her down. In two lengthy Instagram posts, the Olympic bronze medalist reflected on her “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” run, which ended with a surprising elimination last week, and the “truly hurtful” messages she’s received from viewers about her personality — and she’s making no apologies.
“I’ve been sent direct messages about how entitled my personality comes across and how egotistical I am. I want these people to know that after being knocked down so many times, my self-confidence is something I’ve truly had to work to build,” she wrote. “At the end of the day, to be told that my personality sucks is truly hurtful and this has led me to question myself. I will not apologize to anyone I’ve offended because the sarcastic, dry person I have become is someone that truly loves herself and I’ve had to crawl up from the lowest of places to do so.”

Mirai Nagasu, an Olympic medalist and Stars on Ice figure skater, shares her entire routine as well as her favorite skincare products. From arriving to the rink for stretching and physical therapy just before a show, and putting on her makeup with a "pump-up movie" playing in the background, to using mandatory shower sheets just before her end-of-show meet and greets, Mirai shows us how busy and fulfilling her days can be.
For Mirai Aileen Nagasu, the first American to land a triple axel at the Olympic Games, regimen is everything. Whether it's the 45 minutes she takes to stretch before going out on the ice or the green tea-infused facial cleanser she uses every morning, a well-thought-out beauty and lifestyle routine helps keep her on track (and winning medals.) She agreed to give Allure a peek behind the scenes at her daily life, which, yes, includes figure skating costumes covered in sequins.
The first thing Nagasu does in the morning is kiss her dog, a pup named Lincoln that she adopted after a particularly tough skating season. Once cuddle time is over, she starts her skin-care routine, which includes Neo Gen Real Fresh Green Tea Cleansing Stick and a cleanser she describes, in truly athlete fashion, as a "foam roller for your face."
As for makeup, Nagasu wasn't always so obsessed. But over time — and as competition necessitated it — she's become a makeup fan. "The beauty part is part of my sport, but it's something I really hard to learn," she says. "We learn at a very young age to do our own hair and makeup, because no one else is there to do it for you."
She thinks of makeup as paint, part of the routine that gets her ready to give a competition her all. "If I could, I would put the football stripes on my face, but that doesn't go with my sport," she says. "So I put mascara on."
