North Korea is the cruel communist regime as a reflection of Korea's national character. Korea had a penal system similar to the gulag in the colonial era before the Soviet occupation in 1945. So ̆daemun Prison was designed to accommodate five hundred prisoners, more buildings were added between 1915 and 1929 to meet the growing demand. It was especially during the nationwide anti-colonial March First Independence Movement of 1919 that a sudden increase of 3,000 detainees occurred. The prison continued to be used for many decades to suppress political dissent after 1945 in South Korea. The basement floor of Exhibition Hall has models of the rooms in the prison such as the investigation room, where inmates received physical examinations and waited, and the interrogation room, where prisoners were subject to cruel torture. The dim lighting and models of prisoners being tortured created a scary atmosphere and gave me an idea of the excruciating pain the prisoners suffered both physically and mentally.

The New York Times reported on the 25th, citing multiple US government officials, ``North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may take some kind of deadly military action against South Korea in the coming months.'' It was reported.
According to the paper, unnamed US government officials said, ``We do not believe there is an increased risk of all-out war on the peninsula, but Kim may choose a method that would avoid a sudden escalation of tensions and launch an attack.'' "We cannot do that," he said, expressing the above view. The paper pointed to the 2010 shelling of Yeonpyeong Island as an example of military action by North Korea. The view is that North Korea may launch a large-scale provocation that would cause casualties and cause chaos within South Korea without resorting to all-out war or using nuclear weapons. Officials also warned, ``Kim Jong Il's declaration is more aggressive than previous statements, and should therefore be taken seriously.'' Kim Jong Il regards South Korea as ``the No. 1 enemy country,'' and expressed his belief that ``the constitution should clearly state that in the event of war, the Republic of Korea will be completely occupied, pacified, and regained.''

All five of the North Korean ships made the journeys to Vostochny Port with their transponders switched off. One of those vessels, the Paek Yang San 1, was identified by the UN as having been involved in illicit ship-to-ship oil transfers designed to circumvent the import cap, which restricts North Korea to just 500,000 barrels a year each for oil and petroleum products. Deliveries can also only be deemed compliant if they are reported to a UN sanctions committee. Rusi researchers calculated that the oil deliveries documented from Vostochny Port could amount to 125,000 barrels of oil products — a quarter of the permitted annual quota — in a matter of weeks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment. The operators of the North Korean ships could not be reached for comment. The revelation of the apparent oil-for-arms trade comes as western diplomats are rushing to preserve the UN panel that monitors compliance with sanctions on North Korea, amid fears that Russia could veto a renewal of the body’s mandate, according to three people familiar with discussions at the UN in New York. Western officials postponed a vote on renewing the expert panel last week after Russia and China made proposals to water down its mandate, the people said. The deliberations over the UN sanctions panel, which were first reported by Seoul-based news service NK News, have raised questions about how long the UN body — and the sanctions regime itself — can survive. “While there is a debate about the effectiveness of sanctions, what we are now seeing is what would start to happen if the sanctions were removed,” said Byrne. “This is giving North Korea a very significant lift.” um pr
