The movie combines the reawakening of The Force with loss. Carrie Fisher, who has played princess Leia Organa since Episode IV, passed away unexpectedly after she completed her scenes. In the movie, she floats through outer space, ghostlike, after her ship is blown up, somewhere between life and death, and finds a way back in. She does have some Force in her, after all, and not just to connect with Luke. In the real world, her way back in is through the silver screen, where she has given life to one of the most memorable characters in cinema. We miss her. The original greats are all gone now, with the exception of Chewbacca and, of course, the indestructible Millennium Falcon, a key weapon for the Resistance for generations. Episode VII The Force Awakens, has marked the time to move on to a new generation of heroes, struggling with the same angst of their ancestors, split between good and bad, having more power than they can control or realize, and thinking themselves invincible. The Last Jedi completes the transition from old to new. As Luke Skywalker struggles with the ghosts of his past hidden in the Jedi's sacred island, conflicted about helping the feisty Rey (played by awesome Daisy Ridley) on her quest to learn the secrets of The Force, Yoda appears to him: "Young Skywalker, miss you I have..." Skywalker is a tortured soul, racked by remorse and a paralyzing sense of failure. He blames himself for failing to rescue Kylo Ren from the dark side. Yoda, always the mentor, senses all this: "The greatest teacher, failure is." To Skywalker's astonishment, Yoda goes on to destroy all the sacred places in the island, including a holy tree and the sacred books of the Jedi, mocking Skywalker. (Or maybe Rey saved the books?)

Nearly a month since its release, die hard fans and film critics continue to debate the latest Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) developed entry in the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi. The most bearish viewers have pointed to unexplored storylines, missed opportunities for character development, and various plot holes. But has this controversy played out in the film's box office performance? Still a powerful force Make no mistake, The Last Jedi is a financial home run. So far, the movie has generated over $1.2 billion in cumulative box office receipts, and though it remains well behind The Force Awakens, it has surpassed 2016's Rogue One. By their 25th day in theaters, The Force Awakens had sold over $816 million in tickets; The Last Jedi, $574 million; and Rogue One, $479 million. Regardless of the mixed reception, it's clear there was an audience for this new film.

There was much buzz about Prince William and Prince Harry making their cameo debut in the latest Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. But as soon as we were anticipating their onscreen scene, they were cut from the final edit. Did the Palace not approve of the princes taking on a side job? Was their acting just not up to scratch? Was there an epic pay dispute between Harry and Chewie? Turns out, they were cut from the end product for a very simple reason: they were too tall.

Before Star Wars: The Last Jedi even hit theaters, Rian Johnson was already signing the papers to helm his own Star Wars trilogy. But while we know nothing about a script, a story, or even a title, that Rian Johnson Star Wars trilogy could be coming to us sooner than we expected. Lucasfilm has been keeping busy with Star Wars projects outside of the Skywalker Saga. There are the Star Wars Story standalone films, and then the array of movies, TV shows, and projects being greenlit featuring some pretty familiar names. The most familiar, though, is The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who received critical praise for Episode 8 and worked so well with Lucasfilm that he landed a new Star Wars trilogy immediately. All without having to pitch them a story. But details have been scarce on Rian Johnson’s new trilogy, apart from the director promising that his vision of the movies will “capture the spirit” of George Lucas’ original films. Now, Johnson’s longtime producing partner Ram Bergman, who also worked on The Last Jedi, has a few more juicy details to share about the trilogy.
