Japan defeated Spain in the final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 to claim the title just 15 days after losing 1-0 to the same opponents in the group stage. The tables were turned this time around as Hinata Miyazawa, Saori Takarada and Fuka Nagano scored to steer the Young Nadeshiko to their first triumph in the competition. England secured third place earlier in the day, with Georgia Stanway putting the typically-spirited Young Lionesses ahead before Emelyne Laurent equalised to send the game to a penalty shootout, where the English ultimately prevailed 4-2. England’s third place is their highest-ever finish at this tournament. Japan defeated Spain 3-1 to win their first-ever FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup crown in Vannes on Friday evening. This result at France 2018 keeps the trophy in Asia after Korea DPR won the title two years ago in Papua New Guinea.

Prior to France 2018, only three nations had ever won the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which had been held eight times previously: USA, Germany and Korea DPR. By the end of the tournament, however, Japan had added their name to that select list, having lit up the competition with their sublime passing game, orchestrated by supremely gifted talents such as Saori Takarada, Moeka Minami, Fuka Nagano and Riko Ueki. Spain were the only side to trouble the champions, beating them in the group phase – the one and only defeat the Young Nadeshiko suffered at France 2018 – and then fighting till the end in the final, despite being 3-0 down at one stage. Pedro Lopez’s side can take pride from their second place, La Rojita’s best ever performance in the competition, and from the adidas Golden Ball and adidas Golden Boot collected by their star act, Patricia Guijarro.

Hinata Miyazawa, Saori Takarada and Fuka Nagano scored to give Japan a 3-1 win over Spain in the U20 Women's World Cup final. Japan now hold the trifecta of Women's World Cups - at U17, U20, and senior level. Spain dominated possession in the first half but failed to make that advantage count, with Candela Andujar shooting just wide ten minutes before half-time.
