President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed his condolences to the family of Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
The two men, while both Republicans, were political foes. McCain was a leading member of the so-called Never Trumpers, conservatives who refused to get onboard the Trump train.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Senator John McCain will occur at the North Phoenix Baptist Church before being transported to Washington, D.C. for a national memorial service. Following a somber ceremony at the Arizona State Capitol on Wednesday, family, friends and political leaders are remembering Senator John McCain at his Arizona memorial service on Thursday. McCain died at the age of 81 last weekend after a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer that was diagnosed last year. Among those slated to speak at the Phoenix-area Baptist church are former Vice President Joe Biden, who had a decades-long friendship with McCain, and whose son, Beau Biden, also died of the same cancer.

John McCain's former presidential running mate Sarah Palin is not invited to the late senator's funeral. Friend of the McCain family and fundraiser, Carla Eudy, confirmed to PEOPLE that 'invitations were not extended' to the former Alaska governor to attend the funeral of the highly-praised politician and war hero who died last week of brain cancer at 81. Palin joins President Trump on the list of politicians who did not make the guest list, while several other longtime staffers were removed from the invite list by Eudy in the days leading up to the service. The news may come as a surprise to Palin, as she had nothing but praise for the late senator in a recent exclusive interview.

Meghan McCain is carrying on Sen. John McCain‘s legacy in his place. At the Sergei Magnitsky Human Rights Awards on Thursday, the co-host of The View accepted the award for outstanding contribution to human rights law on behalf of her late father, who died in August at age 81 of brain cancer. The late politician and war hero was chosen for the honor because of his advocacy for the Magnitsky Act. The 2012 act put sanctions on Russia after Magnitsky, a lawyer working to counteract the nation’s human rights violations, died in jail, according to The Washington Post.

As he watched a memorial service for U.S. Sen. John McCain, Rob Tibbetts remembered how people across the country rallied behind his family for most of the summer as they followed the search for his daughter, Mollie. He sensed that spirit of unity again as people from across the political spectrum came together for the longtime senator, in an effort that transcended their diverse opinions. After his daughter’s body was found and a man authorities say is an undocumented immigrant was charged with murder, some politicians immediately used Mollie's killing as a rallying cry for tougher immigration laws. Rob Tibbetts wants people to know his family does not want to be featured in that cause, he wrote in a column he shared exclusively with the Des Moines Register on Friday.
