Team USA figure skater Gracie Gold sits down with Michelle Kwan to talk training with her sister, her coach and preparing for the 2014 Winter Olympics. “I was so thrilled when COVERGIRL approached me with this opportunity. Who wouldn’t want to be a COVERGIRL? When you start playing around with makeup and see the ads on TV, everyone always looks in their bathroom mirror and says ‘Easy, Breezy, Beautiful, COVERGIRL.’,” the 18-year-old Olympic hopeful shared with Yahoo. She added, “I do my own makeup. I learned from my mom. When I started skating, she would do my competition makeup. Also, older girls in the rink taught me. Figure skater Meryl Davis took time to mentor me before a competition in Japan once.”

Gold won her first title in a runaway Saturday night, but there was plenty of intrigue behind her in the standings. Fifteen-year-old Polina Edmunds was second, and 2010 Olympian Mirai Nagasu third in a resurgent performance. Gracie Gold performs during the free skate at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships at TD Garden on Saturday. She wasn't perfect Saturday, but she didn't need to be after building a big lead in the short program. She finished with 211.69 points to beat Edmunds by more than 18. "The nerves are something I've battled with and have let get in my head, but tonight I was strangely calm," she said. Skating last, the 18-year-old Gold realized what she had accomplished before she even completed her program. After landing her last double axel, she pumped both fists. "I knew that was it," she said. Gracie Gold is now a heavy favorite to represent the United States at the Sochi Olympics. The Olympic team will be announced Sunday afternoon, and U.S. Figure Skating isn't locked into sending the top three women from nationals. It doesn't even have to take the national champion. Yes, results at nationals are considered, but so are previous performances in hopes the U.S. will send its strongest, most competitive team. That would seem to work in Wagner's favor. She's the only American woman who's done anything of note internationally the last two seasons, winning back-to-back medals at the Grand Prix final and finishing in the top five at the last two world championships.

After watching teenage figure skater Gracie Gold win her first national championship in a landslide, NBC Olympic analyst Scott Hamilton believes she has the ability to live up to her last name at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Analyst Scott Hamilton thinks figure skater Gracie Gold has what it takes to bring gold home from Sochi. “Realistically, I think she has a chance for a medal,’’ Hamilton told Matt Lauer on TODAY Monday. “We are going to be in Russia against a couple of strong Russian skaters, but she’s got everything. She’s got the triple-triple combination, [and] she’s got great presence on the ice. The new coaching relationship she has with Frank Carroll has given her another level of maturity, so she’s doing everything right to put herself in position to medal at Sochi.” Gold, 18, was the headliner at the U.S. National Championships in Boston on Saturday, defeating runner-up Polina Edmunds, 15, by 18 points. Gold, who will appear live on TODAY Tuesday, jumped to the top of the podium after a second-place finish at last year’s national championships, while Edmunds earned a spot on the Olympic team with her second-place finish. However, there was controversy over the third and final selection to the U.S. women’s figure skating team for Sochi, which was announced on Sunday.
