Gracie Gold thought about skipping the fall Grand Prix season while taking “time to find that joy” again in figure skating this summer. On Icenetwork.com’s Ice Talk podcast, Gold said she spent months “avoiding dealing with” the disappointment of falling from first after the world championships short program to finish fourth on April 2. “I thought about not doing the Grand Prix this year this summer, just because, am I ready?” Gold, the reigning U.S. champion still searching for her first individual Olympic or worlds medal, said on the podcast published Wednesday. “But then I thought about not doing it. I would rather do the process, and I’d rather train for it and compete and have it maybe not be perfect than not do it at all. That’s just not my style to just sit this one out.” “I’ve had some struggles,” she said in August, according to the website. “June and July were really hard for me. That’s when worlds depression really hit. I was on vacation. I had a lot of down time.”

Desperate, Gracie Gold phoned the one man she didn’t think would answer her calls. He picked up, and now Gold feels ready to defend her U.S. title in Kansas City next week, following a tumultuous nine months. It all started at the world championships in Boston last spring. By now you’ve read that Gold led after the short program, in position to end a 10-year U.S. medal drought, and failed in the free skate, falling to fourth place. That stayed with Gold the entire offseason. As she toured later that spring with skaters who did earn medals. As she distanced herself from the sport in the summer. And as she struggled mightily through the fall Grand Prix series. Then, at her most recent event in December, Gold had her worst performance in four years at a small competition, finishing sixth against a weak field in Zagreb, Croatia. Her social media afterward read, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” “Anyone who has seen the video from that Golden Spin was like, there’s something wrong with Gracie,” said Gold, who reportedly dealt with upper-back pain in Zagreb. “I finally told my team that I felt like I needed Alex, as tough as that was to say.”

The temperature in West Hollywood crept up into the mid 80s last week, but that didn’t stop 96 of the nation’s top winter Olympians and Paralympians – many toting figure skates, hockey sticks, snowboards and racing skis — from descending on the town. With nearly ten months to go until the 2018 Winter Olympics kick off in PyeongChang, South Korea, phenoms like figure skater Ashley Wagner, ski racer Lindsey Vonn and snowboarder Shaun White arrived for an event – organized by NBCUniversal and the U.S. Olympic Committee – to do promotional shoots in advance of their competition. “The Olympics are different because you’re representing something more than yourself,” Olympic gold medalist Vonn, 32, told PEOPLE in between photo shoots. “You’re representing your country and the world is looking at you to see how you can perform, to see if you can hold up to the pressure and bring home the gold. There’s a lot more that goes into it than just a normal competition.” @graceegold in her aptly titled "Golden" routine at #starsonice

A Springfield doctor and the father of Olympic figure skater Gracie Gold says the state should reinstate his medical license because he didn’t violate terms of an agreement resolving allegations that he stole prescription drugs from HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur for personal use. Dr. Carl Gold, 59, filed a lawsuit Feb. 14 in Sangamon County Circuit Court, contending the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation violated his rights when it issued a summary suspension of his license effective Feb. 6. The next hearing in the case is scheduled July 6 in front of Circuit Judge John Schmidt. The suspension, which prevents Gold from practicing medicine for at least a year, was triggered by what state officials said was a violation of a June 20, 2016, “consent order” with the department that put Gold’s license on probation for at least 12 months. Doctors whose licenses are on probation can continue to practice. The consent order, which Gold signed, didn’t admit guilt but said the state was informed by the U.S. Department of Justice that Gold, an anesthesiologist, had “diverted Schedule II Controlled Substances” from the Decatur hospital “for personal use.” Documents from the state don’t indicate when the alleged thefts took place, but the state’s case against Gold began in 2015. In the order, Gold agreed to not prescribe medications for his own use and said he would participate in Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, receive ongoing treatment from a doctor certified in addiction medicine, and submit to blood or urine testing.
