Emboldened by special counsel Robert Mueller's finding that there was no collusion with Russia in the 2016 election, President Donald Trump and his Republican allies are going on offense over the issue as he heads into next year's campaign.
After Attorney General William Barr's summary of Mueller's conclusions exonerated Trump on the question of collusion, White House aides and Trump surrogates came out swinging in an effort to discredit Democratic critics, the media and the Justice Department over the now-completed 22-month probe.
Trump described Mueller's probe as an "illegal take-down that failed" and urged "somebody" to look into the origins of the collusion allegations. On Thursday, he will have a chance to tout the outcome and press his criticisms when he heads to Michigan for one of the first rallies of his reelection campaign.
"After all this politically commissioned investigation has put Trump associates through, it's clear the bogus inquiry requires scrutiny," said Michael Caputo, a former Trump campaign aide. "If there is no investigation to get to the bottom of this, there is no real justice in America at all."

Two new national polls conducted in the past week find that less than a third of Americans believe the Mueller report exonerated President Trump.
A joint NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll which asked Americans what they thought of the results of the two-year investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller finds that “only 29% say Trump has been cleared of wrongdoing” while a Washington Post-Schar School poll finds “only 32% say Trump has been exonerated on obstruction.”
Jeff Horwitt of the Democratic firm Hart Research who conducted the NBC/WSJ poll with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies, found that, “The public is still in a wait-and-see view of this investigation and what it means for Trump.” The Washington Post poll found, unsurprisingly, that “Most Republicans feel satisfied with Mueller conclusions, while most Democrats are disappointed.”

Former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday condemned President Donald Trump’s calls for a possible investigation into how special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia inquiry started, adding that it creates a troubling precedent. During an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, Comey was asked about whether he feared possible counterinvestigations. “I don't fear it personally. I fear it as a citizen,” he said. “Right? Investigate what? Investigate that investigations were conducted? What would be the crime you’d be investigating? So it’s a terrible cycle to start.”

The US Attorney General has defended President Trump over allegations of obstruction of justice, while reiterating that "no collusion" was found between his team and Russia. William Barr held a news conference on Thursday, shortly before a long-awaited report into the matter was released. He also revealed that investigators had examined 10 episodes of possible obstruction of justice by Mr Trump. The report contains the findings of a 22-month investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump presidential campaign back in 2016
