Despite missing the nationals for the third straight year, defending Olympic and world champion Hanyu, who is recovering from a right ankle injury, earned one of three spots on the men's team based on his past performances. Japan will host the 2019 world championships, which takes place at Saitama Super Arena in March. Uno, who won his third straight national title Monday in Kadoma, Osaka Prefecture, met the qualification criteria set by the Japan Skating Federation, while Tanaka, who finished third, made the team when runner-up Daisuke Takahashi gave up his spot.
